A stolen model returns home.
« on: October 07, 2012, 06:04:11 pm »

After 11 years in the wilderness s/s “Hunan” has returned home into my possession.
People with long memories may recall that 11 or 12 years ago I suffered a devastating robbery. I lost 2 models and just about all my tooling and equipment.
The wreck of the trawler was recovered around 5 years ago, and I’d basically given up hope about ever seeing “Hunan” again. And the it turns up in South Shields.
It was on the verge of being sold to a guy on the South Coast who thought he recognized the name from this Forum after the theft. The vendor was told and immediately contacted me….and now I have it back.
It’s said that criminals tend not to have the sharpest brains in the universe, and to find both models within (almost) spitting distance of the scene of the theft goes to prove that point.
You may recall that the trawler wreck was close to being worthless when recovered and took almost a year to rebuild it.
Apparently “Hunan” suffered a similar fate. Probably due to just being thrown into the back of a van.
Someone I know had a go at repairing the model. He really should have recognized it as he’d seen it often enough on Tynemouth Lake.
The “repairs” are ….to put it mildly…nowhere near good enough, so more work for me. (One example of the botching is the use of flat bar stanchions on a 1920s ship…the rigging was obviously done by someone with no idea about it. I could go on).
Now my problem is “where can I put it”, while working on the Admirals barge!
I hope to be able to get it alongside “Baroda” in the trailer and take it “as is” down to the lake soon. But the where do I put “Gold Ranger” (an even larger model). Problems, problems. Good problems, though.
The immediate solution would be to sell the Trawler and RRS “Discovery”. Worth a thought.
So, from a very happy BY and a multitude of gratitude and thanks to an eagle eyed (and unknown) forum member…..I’ll keep you posted. Bryan.

Good to hear you have both the models back. Have you any idea who took them?

Thank you for that one. You are the only one to mention the the single person that made this happen.
Thanks. BY.

As has been said, so good to hear good news about stolen models for a change.
As model boats building is a fairly exclusive pastime would it be feasible to track its possible history over the 11 years  amongst the Sanddancer modelling community ?. Such a beautiful model must have been remarked on by people 'ower the watter' even if they had never visited the Tynemouth club and seen it there.

Or maybe better let sleeping  dogs lie and just rejoice in the return of such a great model !

Hi, I too am glad that this vessel has been found and returned for I know the heartache the theft caused at the time. Not one but two boats and a lot of modelling gear as well. Very pleased. Nemesis

Many thanks to you all for your kind messages….and also to those who looked at the post, but didn’t post anything. Thank you.
Once I find some space (a lot of space actually as the thing is 78” long), I’m going to leave it alone until I either finish the Admirals barge or get a bit fed up with it.
I think the renovation/repair process will turn out to be like the job I had to do on “Norseman”…..i.e. a long one. So sorry Brian, I doubt if it will be back on the water in a repaired condition by next spring. I might (just “might) bring her down to the lake “as is”. I sincerely hope you will have “words” with you know who, the next time you go fishing!
I enclose 3 pics of her that I took when she was fairly new. They were taken with my old Pentax SLR (film camera) so they aren’t quite as sharp as digital pics. Hope you like them all the same. Regards. Bryan.

I didn't think our Dave was that worn out :)

Glad to see that you got it back, looks a fine model and something I would certainly be pleased about

I suppose that all good intentions get hijacked at one stage or another!
Being a rather nice, bright day, and not knowing how long the blue skies will remain, I decided to take a few “record” photos before I started any work on the model.
I’m not going to tangle up this “chapter” (Model Boating), but have decided to start a new thread in the “Working Vessels R&D” section….if that’s OK with Guiding Light.

To be perfectly honest with you....if you didn't know how it should look, then you may not appreciate the difference.
I do though. I see wrong handrails, lousy and wrong rigging, bits stuck down where bits shouldn't be.....and all that sort of guff.
But from now on I'd prefer any comments (good or ill) to be done via the site I mentioned earlier.
Thanks for your comments. Bryan.
