Tape for sticking down fast electric hatches.
« on: October 19, 2012, 12:35:32 pm »

Just a quick question gentlemen. I will be running my Small Bolt Hydro,HK  F1 Tunnel Hull, and a Pod racer and I wanted to know which is the best tape to use to keep the hatch down.
I have used electrical tape before but on this rock most of it is useless and wont sick the tops down. Any help would be much appreciated.
Many Thanks

The tape we use for racing is a 3m tape almost like clear packing tape. It will not leave any residue but it is expensive by the roll but a roll lasts a long time. The only places I've found to buy it is from somebody or a store that buys it by the case.

The cheaper option but will leave residue if left to long is clear hockey shin pad tape.
Here's some links to both.

I got a roll of waterproof box tape for a couple of quid so I will try that first from e-bay. If it dosn't work well I will try the sellotape Diamond next as this is the second time I have heard the name.
Thank you gents for your ideas and I will find the right tape to use on my new Podracer when it turns up. I also have a small bolt hydro which I am testing the different tapes on. Being new to fast electrics I have a lot to learn and any questions I have I will ask here because someone will answer them for me, Thank you again

Remember with the speed of fast electrics your not using the same tape as scale boats. The speed and forces of the water in a crash peel tape pretty easily. And a lot of the time if you capsize it might be some minutes before you retrieve it. Most serious IC racers in North America use the 3m tape I previously linked too. On the small radio boxes of IC boats a 72yd. roll lasts for years. It is cheap insurance on very expensive boats.
On FE boats you usually have to tape a larger area but still if I use 1 roll a season it is very cheap insurance. Not really worth losing your electronics from saving a couple bucks on tape.
The hockey shin pad tape (not hockey stick tape) works well and some have had luck with plastic coloured electrical tape. But I have had these tapes peel off at speed from the force of the water. They will also leave a messy residue if left on too long.

Also what ever tape you use it helps to clean the surface first with denatured alcohol, I keep a small spray bottle of it with the tape in my toolbox.

Thank you gentlemen for your reply's about which tape to use when I am running my fast electric F1 Hornet. I had both Sellotape and Shin Pad tape and the shin Pad tape came out tops on the day. It was a little stretchy which was great because I had to stretch it around the edges before putting the cowl on the top of the Hornet. The Sellotape was great for the keeping the hatches down on the yachts more so then the fast electric as it didn't have any give in it. Thank you for your help and I now know where to go if I need any help in the future.   :-)) :-)) :-))

Use Gaffer or Duct Tape Lance, they have another use, sticking back on the bits you knock off when on the water.  {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

I second what Len has said.
When it comes to a durable tape that requires remarkable adhesion properties (especially when in conditions of extreme external moisture), I have yet to find one that betters that.
