New here

Hi all

I am new, and know very little about model boats. I have several years experience building and flying model aircraft, but gave that up a while ago to pursue classic cars as a hobby.

I have always loved boats, especially older wooden boats, and have wanted to explore model boating as a hobby for a long time. Now that my son is seven and can appreciate and enjoy this kind of activity I think it would be a great hobby to share with him, so here I am.

The first obstacle I have found is that we don’t seem to have any hobby shops locally that specialize in model boats, only aircraft and cars etc. So to get started we bought some really basic radio controlled boats from a toy shop, just to get us onto the water while I continue my research.

Our next step would probably be to look at importing some decent kits to build, and get proper radios. I am sure I will have many questions as we progress along this journey, and look forward to learning from the collective knowledge on this forum.

Cheers

Welcome to the madhouse KC

Ask away, any questions you like and you will be guaranteed many and varied answers, and if you are lucky, one might even be correct!

You might consider building a springer - lots of examples on here - its a great way to learn building and produces a good fun  tug. Your boy could build one alongside you.

Welcome KCS - just had a quick google and there appear to be plenty of model boat clubs scattered across the Republic - they
might give you better advice on getting raw materials and  models locally as I did notice there was mention of kits having a heavy
tariff put on them if they were imported.

Hi KC, welcome to the forum, I was wondering when you would join up.

You should be able to get a decent 2.4GHZ radio from the RC Car shops in Jhb, to save importing one.

Cheers
