Cutting Ikea Lime blind slats
« on: October 25, 2012, 10:29:44 pm »

Hi guys i'm new to the forum and must say some of the work that you guys do is amazing and real talent in my eyes :-))

I've been into rc planes for years and have just decided i want to try a boat out as i live next to ponds and a river and want to build one not buy one so ordered the Orca from pat tritle and just sorting out all the materials etc

I'm wanting to do the planking on frame in lime from the blinds from Ikea (Lindmon)

Question is can i use a balsa stripper to cut the strips from the blind slats or will they be to hard to cut with a blade

any info would be much appreciated

Thanks LES

Hi Drifter and welcome to Mayhem.

You going to need a power tool of some description.  Either a circular saw or a band saw to achieve a straight edge. Have a look around the forum and get some ideas.

Cheers

Hi ken thanks for the reply and warm welcome.
I'm stuck for a bandsaw or circular saw as 1. I ain't got the money for either 2.got no where to put it as my hobbie room is now being turned into a baby's room and just about all my planes have been evicted to the loft

Thanks Les

I have successfully cut ikea blind slats into hull planks using just a stanley knife and a good straight edge. Just make sure you keep the knife blade vertical.

Oh, and sand down the blind slats to get the varnish off before you slice them, its much easier.

That's great to know Ian thankyou I think a balsa stripper would work even if I have to adjust the blade after a few passes then it means its going to be straight off to ikea then on the weekend :)
