Parts 19, 20, 21 - Deck

Right, back to the deck.

The parts were too long and needed trimming back - First actual manufacturing error!

( I quadruple checked it and I'm sure it's nor my mistake this time!  ::) )

These were trimmed back to sit correctly, halfway across the double deck beam and glued down.

Parts 19, 20, 21 - Deck continued.

Next more deck planking.
NB. The planks are slightly thicker than the curved edge plates but a bit of elbow grease and a power sander will soon sort that out!

Parts 19, 20, 21 - Deck continued.

Once dried, the next set of curved edge "cheeks"?? need to be fitted..... THEY DON'T FIT!  >:(
Again I thought I had screwed up but checking on more reputable websites, it is a manufacturing problem.

I decided the ends were correct and would therefore patch / fix the middle joint.

Parts 19, 20, 21 - Deck continued.

The repair was easier than I thought, just cut a few bit of spare deck planking to fit the holes...... after 3 or 4 attempts, I got bits that fitted!  O0

I reinforced the underside with scraps of hull planking.

Don't look too bad does it?... mind you you could be up to 12,00 miles away from it!  {-)

Parts  21 Deck PVA Reinforcement?!?

Right back to the PVA and Gauze thing again...... sigh!
The instructions say PVA / gauze the underside of the deck, just 3 bays.
Naaaa! "In for a penny, in for a pound!"  I did the whole lot!  ???

My little friend also lent a hand....

Right! - We'll see how that looks in the morning.... I'm wasting away here... I'm off down the Chippy!  O0

Part 21..ish - More work on the deck.

The stern end of the deck need trimming and sanding flush with the deck beam.

Part 21..ish - More work on the deck.

A problem immediately showed up!

Worrying at first but an hour of cautious sanding of deck beams and ribs, I got it the best part of level.

Part 21 - Deck sanding

I hate sanding.... even though it's very therapeutic.... especially with a Blank & Decker power sander!  ;D

What a mess! It looks like it's snowed in here.... I'll bet the air-con breaks down tomorrow, filters blocked!  ::)

More hull sanding....

Right! I need a few of you experienced plankers to see up and rub your hands down the long curvaceous contors of my voluptuous hull and tell me what you think!..... I think I need a small drink..... :P

Remember, there is a second layer of planking to go on top of this on.

Part 22,23 - Upper hull planking.

This is where I left off last time.....

Weill after a couple of weeks off.... here we go again.... I think this section is going to be quite hard....!  :-\

From previous gained wisdom, I sanded the ribs to as best profile I could guess and to remove the black laser ash.

Part 22,23 - Upper hull planking.

The planks are quite narrow so should readily take on the tight curves.
I'm using all sorts of clamps for this section......

Part 22,23 - Upper hull planking. Part III

The planks did start to take on the right form, highlighting the slight "step" in the upper hull.

( The white patch is superglue and accelerator)

Part 22,23 - Upper hull planking. Part IV

For speed and irrational reasons... I decided to use Superglue for this section!  :D

The planks needed a little shortening....

And the hull going to need another good sanding!

Part 24 - Stand

... and after many weeks waiting.... an EASY part!

It's not a very strong stand and not very practical for building either but it useful for .......keeping your build on the shelf!  ::)

At last something a bit more interesting!   ;)

I had my first part failure with part 26.....

This joint has doublers .... that don't overlap the whole joint  :-\

Part 32   -  Superstructure

These are very thin ply that make up a room at the front of the superstructure...
I had quite a bit of trouble as they need to be chamfered so the edges have flats to glue to.
In my opinion a terrible design when the rest of the superstructure is "foolproof" and "over
strong" whereas this part is flimsy, prone to movement whilst gluing,
and prone to misalignment.  >:(

Bow Planking.... again!

Anyway leaving the resin bits aside for a while, I need to get the first layer of planking completed.
As you can see, there are a few gaps that need filling.
Also, the deck and the hull sides seem to be a different shape... any help here would be MUCH appreciated.  :-\

Bow Planking.... again, again!

Filling the gap turned out to be a lot easier than I was making it!
( My mate Bradders says I alwas make mountains out of molehills...
... mole hills are much underestimated in my opinion!  ::) )

At first I tried shaping a plank to fit the hole but it far easier to Superglue a whole plank down
and sand it to shape... ... took about 3 minutes to fit sand to shape.... about 10 minutes to
un-peel myself from the hull and superglue...  >:(

There is still the problem of the misshapen hull to contend, so as I envisaged quite a bit of sanding,
I superglued in a couple of doubles so that there would still be wood when I finished! ( Only took
me 6 minutes to free myself from the superglue this time..... :embarrassed: )

Oh dear!...

But overall..... it does look like the front of a ship!  ::)

So so to bed for another seasion.

Right it's been a while but lets have another go.
To be honest, facing the prospect of planking the whole hull again filled me with fear and trepidation ;
1. Because, as I stated at the outset, this is my first wood boat build
2. It's also my first "scratch build"
3. There no real way of checking if the 1st layer planking is correct.
4. I was waiting for feedback from some of you other guys out there to let me know of any pitfalls!  ;)

I spent a couple of day trawling the net and looked on several sites about the 2nd layer planking and
decided it was much easier than I was worrying about and so thought what the hell, have a go! Surprisingly
enough, I was able to put my hands straight on all the parts & magazines, my mother would be shocked!

Mark a nice centre line, here I'm using a plastic / mylar strip.
Then wait behind the garden gate , jump out and frighten the living daylights out of the
postie again and pick up all the red elastic bands he drops. Cover the hull in elastic bands.
Grab your first  stick  plank and off we go!
