RC Steering for a Tiller Arm
« on: November 04, 2012, 07:10:17 pm »

Hi first post so please be gentle.  ;)

I am trying to complete a model of a mevagissey lugger, no particular boat and being built from a fibre glass hull and scratch built.  It has been in the garage gathering dust for about 7 years. Now it has been resurrected I am trying to work out how to connect a servo to the tiller arm to achieve rc for the steering and then I shall need to get a drum winch to achieve sail control. Hopefully I have attached some pictures so you can see the problem.

if you have the servo mounted so the arm is vertical, with two brass wires vertical in the centre position (one either side of the tiller bar) when the servo turns one way or the other the bars will move the tiller bar one way or the other. the slot formed by the two wires allows for th vertical displacement of the tiller bar (could also be a single wire bent in a U shape).

Hi PJM and welcome to Mayhem.

I have removed your duplicate picture in the last post. Excellent picture of your query which highlights the problem very well.

Let us know how you get on with her as we look forward to many more pictures.   :-))

You could cheat.  :-))

One of those curvy plastic cable-in-tubes led out below the waterline to a horn installed on the side of the rudder. Inboard, and above the w/l, the tube ends next to a servo mounted however and wherever you like. (The Racundra fix, coming to a website near you ... soon!)

The other option would be to bury a couple of servos inside a steersman, who moves the rudder. (The waste-of-time-and-effort fix.)

ive a rebuilt essex oyster smack which i converted from a free sailer to radio control last year , onto the tiller stock ive fitted a small brass block , with a small hole close to the stock , through which ive two small cables ( stainless steel ) which run back through the deck to a standard servo below the deck

Thanks for the suggestions. I shall probably try a combination of them all! At least I now have an idea of how to do it, thanks.

I have looked at a similar problem.

My plan is to put a arm below decks, and use ball and socket joints for the push rod ends to fit to. Then replace the push rods with the flexible nylon and sleeved push cables (a bit like a bike brake cable) that they use on aero models.
I have about a 15mm gap to play with but this get wider as you go forward.

Crazy idea, I know.

shouldnt be a problem , providing youve not got any tight curves for the cable runs , ive found that my fishing smack with two pulleys on the deck can damage the wire ive used previously .jon
