sanity check please - 1 or 2 ESCs?
« on: January 08, 2013, 12:28:45 am »

Hi All

A significant reduction in funds has meant I will have to content myself with rebuilding a twin electric ebay model of a few years ago for the time being. :((

The first supplied engines went up in smoke and were replaced by a pair of JP power 400s which seemed fast enough for my tastes although the
one motor on , one off turning was a bit naff .

The original radio had no ESC and has now been discarded. I am planning to add a rudder servo and possibly uprate the existing rudder (which was locked straight with two screws originally)

The replacement 7.x v NiMH pack is rated to 3.7 amps and (Im told...but have not proven)  current limited to 20A by design ??

So should I fit two ESCs (one for each motor) and parallel them up to the RX throttle control or should I fit ,say, a 25A rated ESC and
just parallel the two motors ??

planning to water cool the motors and fit stronger mounts as their predecessors melted the screw glue due to insufficient heat-sinks!

what does the panel think please ? one?/two?/something else

regards

I have used both systems.   It depends on the maximum current drawn by the motors.  I can best explain by quoting my usage.
In one boat I am using two MFA 540/1, running current of each about 3A.    The motors are connected in parallel to the output of one Mtronics 15A ESC.
In another boat I used two Graupner 700 BB turbo motors which draw a much higher current.   I used separate ESC`s for each motor, connected to the receiver by a Y lead.
Hope this helps.  Pete

One ESC is fine 20-30Amps.  Secure linkages, fittings to the rudder though.    :-))

thanks folks.

i have an esc which is 20A constant 25 peak so ill parallel the motors for now and see how it works out.

sourcing the rudder is going to be more of a challenge as all the internal fitting ones ive seen are too tall
and the external fitting ones require an additional hole or two in the back of the boat.

the overall height of the stock rudder internals is less than one inch and the boat shell is split at the waterline making mounting of an external rudder difficult.

the search goes on :0)

none presently, its 140 miles away in my attic  :-)

its a fairly simple ebay twin prop electric racer, twinhulled at the front with a wing on the back.
did a google image search for it and found a dubious picture of the boat being held aloft by some
lass showing her stocking tops so wont bother posting that....
{hears the distant rumble of several tens of men googling frantically} ;)

ill post some up as the rebuild proceeds
