Sealink ferry model - from the BR days
« on: January 25, 2013, 12:23:41 am »

Hello all.

Well, I finally managed to submit a post a few minutes ago and so I thought I would post another as my very first attempt failed and I had typed a whole waffling paragraph which disappeared into thin air!

So, I am new on here.  It has been great to read some of your posts.

I have had a Sealink ferry model for around 27/28 years.  It is in a large plastic display case.  The ferry has a BR corporate monastral blue hull, white upperworks and black-topped red funnel with the BR logo in white.  Looks so lovely, but it has just sat on the top of a bookcase for all those years... Does anyone know where would be the best place to establish a value and to, possibly, sell?  If its worth keeping for a few more years, I will.  Thanking you in advance for any advice.  Red Rebel

Please don't use all RED writing.  Some of old folk have difficulty reading it.

Auction houses (real ones, not ebay) might give you a value.....
By the description, it sounds like a travel agents model.

Going by what I have seen on ebay, you could probably expect a couple of hundred pounds - all dependent on condition, and which particular ship it is.

Welcome along by the way - there are a few of us ferry nutters enthusiasts on here....

Why not post up a picture or two of her - you never know, one of us might be interested  %) %) %)

Thanks Carl and Ali!

It's just over 3' in length, by 9" depth and about 12" in height.  Yes, it was a travel centre display model.  I worked for BR back in the 80's - the good old days.   :-))

Good condition as it hasn't moved from top shelves in 2 homes in 27/28 years!  Dusty on the plastic display case no doubt.  lol

Can't see a name but I'll look closer in daylight.  I literally just brought it home from work one day (my supervisor took the twin funnel and let me have the single funnel) and stuck it on top of a shelf.  lol

I had a feeling it would turn out to be Hengist or Horsa.
I love these Sealink ferries but the wife would spew if I came home with another big model at the moment.

Dave, get in there quick.

The twin funnel model would either have been the St. Anselm or the St. Christopher:

Hello
it is all ways hard to put a valvue on these models.
A builders model of the townsend enterprise 1:100 sold on ebay for +2000 euro
Travel agents models were not as limited  but buy the age of your model I dought there are many left.
the value depends on what you need it for. For insurance I would go with a least £2K+.
To sell it depends whos there on the day .
I would not knock Ebay rember auction houes charge a masive cut. + ebay if set up correctly has a massive crowd compaired to an auction house.
A travel agents near me had one of thoes models to.

Just a quick tip Red - never press post on here before first copying what you have typed - lesson I learned anyway.

Just been and visited the oracle (my dad) The travel agent models were made by the model building department of Zambia engineering in Ashford, Kent (they traded under the name Tech-pro) the models of Hengist and Horsa cost £200 new, the St Christopher models were bigger and cost £600. they were made from moulded plastic. the bigger builders models were more expensive at £2000 each and the half hull models (20 + foot long) were over £6000 each.
My dad has  original oil paintings of one of the ships plus 4 of the limited run of 150 prints from the painting, on the painting you can see where the livery was changed before the prints were made and the oil painting was modified to reflect these changes.
my dads title at sealink was ports manager, he used to run around as a general dogsbody for the managers and directors, one of the builders models at over 6 foot was taken home by one of the managers and his son renovated it for them.

I was also regaled with the tale of how my dad saved the massive painting of the maid of kent that was hung in the meeting rooms at charter house in Ashford (the only place with enough wall space in the building). This was just after sealink had seperated from British Rail, and were preparing to ove offices to Ashford, a BR Heritage article appraiser was touring the building 'making sure' that prestige and valuable items were preserved, he was observed unscrewing this valuable painting from the wall to 'preserve it' when my dad spotted this and informed the Managing Director, he immediately stormed down and had words with the appraiser reminding him they had bought the business lock stock and barrel and that included the fittings (ie the painting). the appraiser was seen later re-attaching all of the artwork he had previously removed to the walls.
