Below decks & Engine compt.
« on: February 07, 2013, 05:05:04 pm »

I am at the point of fitting out the engine compartment and below decks
Electrics, on my new boat, hence the wood is a clean, natural colour with just a coat or two of sanding sealer.
I'd like to know how members treat the inside compartments of their boats?
Natural or painted?
Its not especially important but there must be some preferences?
Many thanks......any photo's?

If it is a scale model and the compartments can be seen then it depends on the model.
A lot of ships had a white painted engineroom, a lot of lifeboats were grey.
As I say it depends on the model.

The boat in question is not a scale model but built from a kit from the late 50's.
Plenty of the inside can be seen through windows etc.

I understand what you are saying about 'scale models' I think, ie. keeping
the look authentic(?) so that would rule out any specific look to my boat as
it is simply a model.
Once its painted there's no turning  back thats my dilemma.

If it is a ply kit then nothing looks nicer than well sanded and sealed interior
It will show off the construction and sealed/varnished wood looks great.
Let's have some pictures please.

Here are two pics of the boat - I dont have any views looking down into
interior - just when I needed them!
You can just about see some of the wooden interior though.

I have only got as far as undercoat on the hull and cabin. Waiting for warmer
weather before spraying outside.
I have since lined the decking for a planked effect. Its a teak veneer.
It will be satin varnished eventually.

I should have emailed you first Geo, is that a colour scheme you would go for then?
I think I'm almost settled on sand sealer and satin varnish.
Moving on slowly with the completion but it will accelerate once weather breaks.
Not for the AGM tho!

After sealing etc, my preference is to paint the hull interior white.

It makes it easier to see what I am doing when carrying out maintenace/repairs etc.

so many colours, so many choices................I would preferably just seal and varnish it.......it looks a very nicely put together boat with nice wooden interior...........my preference would be to leave it varnished.............but as they say.........101 choices.......the choice is yours and yours only.

Neil,
Yes, I think seal and varnish will be my choice too, its a simple and natural finish
which will look fine I'm sure.
It is a really nice looking boat and I'm looking forward to getting it in the water
come the spring.
