Its a simulated sound (made up by the electronics) as ACTion say in their instructions.  By itself, it is only suitable to drive a small speaker, and might need an extra amplifier to drive a larger speaker.  There are other sound units on the market with much more capability that use recorded live sound.  While they do sound better, they also cost more.  Now that ACTions range has been moved to Component Shop, hopefully they will be using Daves demo rig, and a visit to a show where they are exhibiting you might be able to hear before buying for a more informed decision.

Have a look at the Technobots Sound Generator

Link : http://www.technobotsonline.com/steam-engine-sound-simulator.html

(there is a sound clip on the web page)

it is a reasonable price, and sounds very natural.

The technobot units also have start up and shut down built in.( start up on throttle
movement, shut down when throttle is not used for 30sec approx).

No, the speaker and amp(if required) have to be bought separately

I did figure out a way of putting it altogether cheaply - I will dig my
notes out and let you know whats involved.

from the technobots web page . . .
Quote
Speaker impedance: 8 ohm minimum (Technobots part no. 2400-015 recommended)
Speaker supply voltage: From zero to 12v  (governs the volume of the unit)
Audio power output: Approx 4W RMS @ 12v into 8 ohms (equates to 160W PMPO in today's modern hi-fi advertising terms!)

There is a 4w amp on the sound unit so it just requires a speaker

recommended one : £6.14
http://www.technobotsonline.com/10w-75mm-loudspeaker.html

if however you feed it with less than 12 volts you may get away with this one (£2.45!)
http://www.technobotsonline.com/2w-50mm-plastic-cone-loudspeaker-8-ohm.html

I was thinking of using 6 volts approx from 4 x AA NiMh Cells in a 1/72nd Scale Model
Slipways Puffer where there isn't a lot of space inside the hull!

Darren

On the web page for the sound unit, if you click on the 'Downloads' tab you can
get a copy of the Instruction Manual (PDF format) and on page 7 there is the
wiring diagram you need - there are also some extra cables included to allow you
to make up the 'break in cable that goes between the receiver and the sound unit
it is all explained in the instructions

Regards
