Broken Robbe F14 twin stick Tx?
« on: May 06, 2013, 07:01:41 pm »

Hi everyone

I've had a very strange experience with my boats over the last few weeks, for a start we thought the rx was at fault but today whilst testing my dads CMB radio we discovered that the tx was not working.
The batteries are fully charged and power is definitely going to the tx power indicator but its not transmitting. We have changed crystals too and the same fault occurs. We have tried our other Robbe F14 Twin stick and it works with no problems. We have taken the back off but can't find any visible damage or smell of electronic burning. So we are stumped as to what has caused our usually reliable tx to fail!  <:(
Any ideas?

Without fully testing the board it could be anything, probably a dry joint.

Maybe time to let it go or use for spares.

Do you mean standing them back up when they had fallen over watching the RAF jets?! %)

Had hoped to fix it some way but I'm no electronics expert, as they say in the RAF 'if it can't be fixed with a hammer, its a eleckie problem!' How do you test a board? I'm guessing with a multi meter?

I'll bring it to the Mayhem at Wicksteed show for anyone to have look (or laugh) at, but it does sound very electronical instead of physical! Obviously beer money will be paid to anyone who can shed a light on it! :-))

BTW, if you like the penguin jokes you'll love the penguin springer, which will be patrolling the Wickies lake from the Friday morning to Sunday evening! %%

If you are a really lucky lad, it might just be a case of taking the crystal out, wiping its little legs, and plugging it back in a time or two.  This has the effect of cleaning the contact surfaces in the socket.  Of course, this only works if that was the problem in the first place.
The bits most likely to fail are the battery contacts and the switch and the power socket (not them, because you get the power light) the pot wipers (not them because likely only one will fail at a time) and the crystal legs not making contact because of old age and because its the start of the season.  Otherwise its something technical in the region of soldered bits.

As Malcolm has stated, one of electronics worst faults is mechanical ingineering. Given that many "Add ons" are available for the F14 which are connected by plugs and sockets, are all the contacts clean? Has the F14 a separate RF module? Seem to remember that the more classy bits of gear at the time were "Internationalised" by allowing different front ends to be interchanged. Worth checking for mucky contacts.

Hi everyone

Thanks for the advice so far, I'll try removing the crystal and any other connector to see if there is any wear or corrosion, hopefully that'll work, if not I'll contact Marc of A Model World.
Thinking back I haven't used that tx since last July so it could have got a bit corroded internally.
The tx is the basic version with no add ons or modules, adding some modules was planned until I saw the price of the extras!  <:(

Hi
If you want to install an add on I have an unused multi-prop module and decoder I would consider selling. I may even sell my F-14 which also has a multi-switch module installed along with a decoder and the slider module. Let me know if you're interested

The most likely culprit is the aerial. Check the wire where it connects to the aerial inside the transimitter, it's only held on with a small Phillips machine screw, and it comes loose with repeated removal of the telescopic aerial. You get the same problem with FC16's.

The tuner board is integral to the rest of the board on the F14.

Took the crystal out and cleaned the legs and amazingly it works again! Thanks for advice everyone, we are moving the tx boxes into a warmer drier environment when they're not being used.
