motor only goes forward
« on: June 16, 2013, 04:14:37 pm »

Once again I have to use my typing skills to request some assistance for my first build ,the good ship 'Another C*** Up'.
In the hull of this ship I  have the following kit joined up :
6volt battery -charged
6v Decaperm motor
Mtronics 15 esc
Planet receiver
Servo for rudder
All seems to work except that the motor will only spin in one direction on the transmitter.
Can anybody give me a clue as t what the problem is likely to be please

Have you used throttle stick centred as the "engine stop" position when setting up?

Is it a VIPER TEMPO ESC ? I think their forward & brake only for jam jars . . . . it should have MARINE on it under the VIPER . . . you have a two second 'window' to set the mid-point on the ESC to your receiver on the MARINE version , hit the reset & that should give you forward & reverse . . .

If you have set it up as advised and it still does not work correctly, I suspect the ESC is faulty.   I have had this happen with a couple of Viper RSC`s.   Return it to Mtronics.   Pete

Does it have a "safe set" on power up?

Looks like faulty piece of kit. What is the most cost effective speed controller on th market for a decaperm motor?

The most common problem with mtroniks speed controllers is in the programming sequence. if you hit the wrong button at the wrong time you will disable reverse. The number of these I have reprogrammed is many. Despite the Mayhem default setting being "its faulty, send it back", try assuming it isn't first :-)

Which Mtroniks unit is it? Marine 15? Tio? The programming for these units seems to have changed from the first units to the latest units. So i dont want to give you duff info when I remember how to reprogramme the settings!! :-)

Does the Planet TX have a failsafe?
If so the RX is probably seeing a full back stick on switch on.
This happens with some of the cheaper 2.4GHz sets.

A small caveat about the instructions - the N-R switch on the TX has to be set to "N" rather than "R" for the calibration to work.

Bob

I feel a challenge there.

Okay, here goes.
the latest versions of the Viper Marine speed controls have no capability for reprogramming their various bits and pieces beyond forward and reverse. However the last version had all the bells and whistles of the car versions available at the touch of a button. I have found one in a boat and spent twenty minutes playing about with the settings and compiled the following;

Plug the boats battery in.
Turn on the Transmitter.
Hold down the Set Button on the speed control.
Now turn on the model via whichever switch powers up the speed control.
Now release the button.

This accesses the various settings available and you should now have a FLASHING GREEN light. This flashes for about 5 seconds, during which you can access the forward/reverse settings. If you dont press the button again in this 5 second window the speed control moves on to the next part of the programming. My advice, turn it all off and start again from the top.

While the light is FLASHING GREEN, push the button and release it. you should now have a SOLID RED light displaying. This first push disables the reverse and I think this is where most people accidentally disable their reverse function.
Rapidly press the button again.
You should be met with TWO FLASHES RED. This engages a delay on your reverse coming on.
Rapidly press the button again.
You should be met with THREE FLASHES RED. This engages a different delay on your reverse, can't remember what the difference is and quite frankly it doesnt matter on a boat anyway.
Rapidly press the button again.
You should be met by FOUR FLASHES RED. This engages normal reverse function ( and should really have been the programmed as the first button push, but hey, what do I know :} )

You should now be met by a SOLID GREEN light, followed by a RED FLASHING light...touch nothing, leave it alone, this part of the programming accesses Braking Function, car stuff for car boys, not for us...

A SOLID GREEN/RED follows this.

Then ALTERNATE FLASHING GREEN/RED. This is the normal Forward/Reverse Setting part of the programme. Quickly press the Button.

A SOLID GREEN light follows, push the Transmitter stick forwards to set top speed forward.
A SOLID RED light follows, push the Transmitter stick backwards to set full speed astern.

That should be it. if it is still not working, try the above a couple more times. You should be pressing the button a total of five times to restore Reverse, once to access the settings and four times in quick succession to get the FOUR FLASHING RED lights. Or pressing the button a total of six times if you reset the final Forward/Reverse settings as well.

Older Mtroniks speed controls have a slightly different set up procedure, but the above should deal with controllers made in the last three or so years, however if your speed controller only goes backwards, red light on, its knackered :-))

Thanks to you all for the advice. Now following independent analysis by two people the problem is that the speed controller is knackered. In the post to mtroniks first thing tomorrow

Quiet enlightening ;I didn't know that the reverse could be disabled
Wish I knew about that yesterday , would have saved some head scratching !!!
