Tamiya Extension lead
« on: June 30, 2013, 09:22:20 am »

Hi I wonder if someone could help! I need an extension lead as my battery and esc are located too far from one another, I had a quick look around but just want to check if something like this is suitable....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tamiya-Female-Connector-to-Tamiya-Male-4-5-Mini-Connectors-/370801354933?pt=UK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN&hash=item56557ba8b5

I wasn't sure as they refer to it as a "mini" connector which has thrown me!

Many thanks in advance!

As the description reads, it isn't simply an extension lead, it is a converter lead from standard to mini plugs.

Can you not simply extend one set of your leads? Adding more plug in connectors to any cable run is adding potential failure points, increases voltage losses etc......if you could cut the leads on the battery( you could cut the ESC leads but that would invalidate any warranty ), solder a piece in and insulate it would be the better solution.

If you're drawing any form of heavy amperage (10+) I would be inclined to replace the Tamiya connectors with something a little beefier.

Seconded.
Tamiya Connectors are OK for basic RC cars and smaller boats, but they cannot handle much load.

Tamiya mini connectors are for the smaller scale RC cars they offer

Thanks for the info, its not a massively powerful motor so the tamiya connectors will be ok. I will probably cut and extend the length of the battery cable, didnt even think of doing that! :P

Tamiya battery connectors come in 2 sizes as I found out when i bought some from fleabay.  The larger version is commonly seen on so called "buggy packs", multi cell packs such as 7.2v.  Both male and female versions can be had from Maplin.

Apart from Ebay the minis can also be found at Tantronics

I'd like (for various constructional reasons) to put a charging connector in parallel with the battery speed controller connection in a plywood boat I'm building. Anyone have any experience of this and know if anyone makes/sells a 3 way Tamiya lead?

No but its dead easy to wire one up
However you need to ensure that you wire in a switch to physically change over from running mode to charge, in order to protect the electronics

The 'Large' are 5 amp continuous current and the 'small' are 3 amp continuous. If you exceed these ratings you run the risk of welding the plug and socket together!!
