First Boat Build of Veron River Police Boat
« on: August 16, 2013, 10:10:45 pm »

Hi all,

Just thought I`d post a couple of pictures of my boat build as its progressing.

Its taking a bit of time due to lack of time with my young Son to look after, but I`m quite pleased with it so far.

Ive concentrated on making sure that everything is nice and square and all the wood joints are tight for maximum strength.

I have sealed the framework with varnish and it is now ready for the ply skins to be added to the hull.

The first pic is of the main centre box with the keel added.

The second pic is of all the formers and side pieces added.

Hope you like it !!!

Looks pretty cool, haven't seen a boat built around a box like that before but it seems like a good idea. Looking forward to seeing more photos as it progresses (hint hint).

Most of Phil Smith's designs (Mr Veron's designer) utilised this form, RTTL, Marlin to name but two.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your comments on my boat build.

I have fitted the lower hull skins now and hopefully will get a chance to fit the side skins this week. I normally have to go in shed after my Son has gone to bed, so I have to burn the midnight oil to get anything done lately !! I`m normally out there until about 11 ish .

Here is a picture of the boat so far  8)

Nice build, very neat and tidy.
Phil Smiths designs (aircraft and boats) are so well thought out and simple to construct.
Have made a number of his designs way back in my youth. He was a real gentleman as well.
keep up the build
cheers

Hi everyone,

here is a picture of the hull as it stands now.

It now has the bottom and the side hull skins fitted and trimmed. The next stage is fitting all the top ply skins, the rear skin and the bow block.

I will keep you posted of the next developments when they happen.

Hi Bob,
I only used temporary pins which have now been removed.
As the hull is to be painted  and not varnished I intend to mix some P38 Isopon filler and push down into the pin holes. I hope this will work out okay. The ply was dampened before being fitted and after drying the inside was given a coat of yacht varnish, so it should hold its shape quite nicely.
I do have a razor plane as well as various Permagrit tools and sandpapers, so I expect to be sitting in the middle of a heap of balsa shavings very soon. I must admit those sort of jobs are the ones that I dont like doing so much, but at least I only have to do one!

Hi Steve, about pin holes.  When a pin is pushed into wood it just splits the wood, i.e. does not cut it the way a drill does.  Before you fill with isopon may I suggest you just try wetting the pin area and more often than not the wood will expand and the pin mark nearly vanishes.
I have the plans, just not got round to building it.  Have you looked on the Met Police web site for Police launch pictures?  There is a very nice model there as well.
regards Roy

Thats a good idea, I will try wetting it first.
Yes I have seen that model on the Met police site, its lovely, innit.
I have got to start planning where to install the esc and receiver soon and havnt made up my mind where to put them yet. Any ideas? I was thing of maybe putting a false dashboard at the front of the cabin with the receiver inside. Not sure whether to make the cabin removable to access it if I need to. The Spektrum receiver has one aerial on a wire so it can be run up a bit higher inside the cabin.
The esc im not sure about yet, it is a totally waterproof one so maybe on the underside of the cabin roof ??

Cheers, Steve

Watching your build with interest, I had one a few years ago. A lovely job you are doing too.
Have you seen the model in the NMM?

I understand Phil Smith based his kit/plan on this model.

Hi Tony,

Yes I have seen / downloaded the pictures from there. I am going to use them and other pictures I have of other peoples models as a reference when it comes to finishing my boat.

Do you still have yours ?

Hi Steve,
Sadly no longer with me, model suffered damage whist in shed storage and was scrapped. I would like to build a replacement, maybe when some of the other models in progress are completed.

These are some photographs of mine, The air horns and searchlight (either illuminating or non-illuminating) as originally supplied to the Veron kits are still available from Reade Models. The lifebelt on the top of the cabin roof, I searched many sites, couldn't locate one to the dimensions shown on the plan and finished up cutting two round discs of 3mm obeche, glued together, filed and sanded to the profile.

Hi Tony

That was a lovely looking boat, pity it got damaged in the shed and had to be scrapped.

I have found that with my model planes the most damage that usually happens to them is due to shed related `incidents`, or `hanger rash` as we call it !!  I am trying to be careful when handling the boat in the shed.

I am going to have a go at making a searchlight when I get to the finishing stages. Also going to make the lifebelt as I have also failed to find one anywhere. Mind you, making bits and pieces like those are a challenge and very rewarding when it works out.

Hi Steve,

It will be a pleasure to watch the rest of your build on this thread. Thanks for the positive comments, I am sure some time, in the not-to-distant future I will build a replacement.

Wish you well with the rest of the project.

Tony.

Hi all,

I have managed to get a little bit done recently.

I`ve finished fitting all the top ply skins apart from the rear section. This bit will have to wait until I have set up the rudder servo. I hope to be able to make some sort of hatch on this area so I can access the servo if necessary. I have made the hole for the rudder tube and trial fitted it. The final fitting will be after the hull has been painted.

I have also managed to fit and shape the bow block. This took quite a while of careful shaping with the razor plane and sandpaper. It still needs a final sand with fine paper but I will leave that until just before the hull painting begins.

I fitted the propshaft in last night and have lined up the motor and measured it so that I can fabricate the motor mount. I made most of it and it will be ready to fit soon.

The next stage I think I will do is to fit the keel on and all the rubbing pieces which I have obtained in spruce so that they are a bit tougher. I reckon then I will have to make a stand for the boat so that I can sit it on the bench without damaging any of the underneath.

Will post next developments soon.
Steve. 8)
