Hi everyone

Dad has been making his periscopes and aerial masts on the conning tower from brass tubes and rods.
A temporary range finder has been made from wood but he has decided that he will make one from brass later. The conning tower roof has been made and the windscreen glass has been added. A vent has been made from brass too.

Hi everyone

Getting more and more pictures now of Dad's work, he has just bought some 0.5mm piano wire for the railings, see what you think so far...

He has also painted the deck dark grey and stuck the conning tower roof on with its windbreak. Fred the sailor has taken the helm being watched by the captain.

Thanks Bob, and I will, she's going to Warwick to show everyone her progression from last year. Dad will try to emulate the turrets before the show... ;)

If you are there tomorrow at Warwick look for the long blue box being loaded on to the Wickies stand, there will be a familiar looking sub peeking out! :D

I particulary like the submersible rangefinder.

Enjoy the Warwick show!

Missing postings on this, everything right? Is the build moving forward?

Hi Salmon

Dont worry, Dad is taking a short break rebuilding our second model boat (a 1/12th 60ft RAF General Purpose Pinnace). She had some rather worrying battle damage after 9 years of almost constant use! He has almost finished it and will be restarting in the next month on the sub. :-))
He has bought some more railings for her- two ball 21.5mm high brass ones for the stern section.
We will be converting the twin stick to a single version and use the spare socket for the gun turrets and range finder. We might be taking her out for a sail soon providing the weather doesn't worsen.

Is it an armed pontoon used by Elves? The title suggests this.

Not Elven, but eleven as in the number following ten and before twelve. :-)

So not likely to be crewd by tall men with pointy ears and a few years behind them? Hm, back to 'Finkin' again.

Sailing phase two...

Considering the rough conditions she sailed very well with the battery lasting approx 1 hour.  :-))

Another instalment of the sub build, at Coalville we commissioned Barry's Lettering to come up with the X.1.  with shadow for the conning tower pennant number. Not trusting himself I was persuaded to put the pennant onto the model which went without any hitches. See what you think...
The forward turret guns have been positioned into place with the semi automatic loading trays.

Crikey Christain

I had almost forgotten id written that letter all those years ago! I later found out curtesy of the small craft group that I had got the info about the Walton HSL gun turrets wrong and that they were fitted but minus guns. :embarrassed:

I've got almost all of the build logs pictures of all the boats we've built, the only two missing are the two springers... But I do have the following
Walton HSL 2642
GP Pinnace 60ft
40ft Armoured Target Boat
62ft Thornycroft Fast Motor Boat
RAFA Adastral
Vosper Thornycroft 34m Fast Attack Boat (proposed)
HMS Gnat
CMB 216
HMS X1
HMS Prince George

The Gnat was the first I put on the Mayhem from the beginning.

Is that teeth marks and slobber I see on the hull after Phil savaged it at Warwick!

Teeth marks-no! His teeth are still too soft for that, he's got several years of hardening them up first! :}

Hi everyone

Been a while since the last update but I'm sure you'll enjoy the out come of Dad's hard work.
The turrets have been made and transverse brilliantly so I'm sharing the pictures Dad took whilst I was in Gosford.

Re: HMS X1- It's almost finished!!!
« Reply #174 on: July 05, 2015, 01:07:53 pm »

Well as the title says, HMS X1 is almost finished!!! Only two years in the making- not bad compared to the HMS Gnat which took four.

HMS X1 went for a sail today at Wicksteed Park for her first complete sail with everything finished (well almost finished you can never say a model is ever finished!). Her two turrets and her range finder were fully operational and she looked magnificent on the water.

She just needs her gun crew fitting to feed her two twin 5.2inch guns and some other signalling flags and she will be fully complete. Dad has made the diving wires, hand rails, voice pipes to the gun turrets from various bits of piano wire and brass tube. He carved the turret roof's from soft wood and hollowed the ceilings and a bit of filler blended them into the turret body. Before he finished the roof he added the sighting holes and gun sights from brass tube. If you think that the gun barrels can not elevate because there is no room you'd be wrong like me! The section above the barrel moves up with the barrel! A bit of plastic card square section finishes off the turret and blends everything together.

Hope you've enjoyed the build and the trials and tribulations along the way, she will now sail at Wicksteed Park and will make appearances at Warwick this year. Feel free to continue to ask questions and see you all soon.

Torpedo away and prepare to surface! Fire guns!!! :-))
