Hey folks, I'm McGherkin. 20 years old and based in (Occasionally!) sunny Plymouth.

A bit of background first; my grandfather (Gordon Roue of the Liskeard Model Society if anyone's local) was a model boat builder for many years, mainly building lifeboats, but also a few sailing vessels and taking on other people's builds when it all got too much for them!

I've always been fascinated by his work, and have for a long time considered getting into modelling.

Unfortunately my grandfather passed away earlier this year, and he left me some of his models. Only one is R/C, an Oakley class lifeboat, but she's too old and precious now to go into the water.

I'm a bit too inexperienced to start scratchbuilding right away, so I've decided to build the Model Slipway Tamar class lifeboat. Quite fitting really as I work for the company which built them! I've not purchased the kit yet as I'm waiting for the next pay packet, but I've got plenty of questions, ideas and probably a huge set of problems, but I'm sure you'll be able to help me out with those (I've learnt plenty already just from trawling through people's threads!)

I'm also a member of the Maritime Volunteer Service, as a coxswain of our patrol vessel, a 34 foot Nelson, so I've got my feet wet as it were.

See you all out on the water ;)

Hello McGherkin and welcome to ModelboatMayhem.

Just the type of member we need on here. I expect there will be interest from our members.  A good choice of build which will present no problem and also help you in the theory of model boat building.

Any questions, then feel free to ask. Why not do a build blog with pictures so that we can follow you.    :-))

Cheers

Oh, don't fear, there will be a build thread! Also cheers for the welcomes so far!

Whilst I have a Mod's attention, are the verification questions for each post permanent or are they only for the first 50 posts or so/free members only?

I forgot to mention that I also have a HL tank, but that doesn't float!

Also good to see that a lot of the people who I follow on YouTube (Gribeauval, Alan Noble etc) are on here too!

The verification questions only last for about  5  'sign ons'.

Tedious i know, but necessary in this sneaky world of computing.    %)

Cheers

Welcome McGherkin.I am sure you will find answers to most of your queries on here,as I have.
Although your Dad was a member of the Liskeard Club, most are not boat modellers,I know many of them, and fine modellers they are, too. May I suggest you join the Plymouth Model Boat Club, who are boat oriented, and would certainly be helpful to you.
I also know quite a few of these boys as well, and they are great fun to be with.Ron,who runs the club,Brian,a superb Lifeboat modeller, and Nigel.I can give you a contact number if you PM me.
Dont forget there is a separate Lifeboat Section on here also, from which to get advise.
I exhibit my model Lifeboats throughout Cornwall and Devon to raise funds for the RNLI.
Good Luck with your build, just go along steady and you will enjoy it all coming together.
DONT be afraid to ask anything on here, thats what its for!
Cheers,
Mick F

Firstly thanks for the post :)

It was my grandfather who was the modeller, not my father!

I've certainly heard of the Plymouth MBC, but up 'til now I've not really had anything to bring along. I'll drop you a PM tomorrow for that number! I'll also have to have a look through your posts at your models ;)

It's good to have a member of the younger brigade on Mayhem O0  It's also wonderful to see a young person involved as a volunteer, too - well done that man :-))

Despite what Stav says, we do have quite a lot of old(er) people here, I know, I'm one of them :-)
