Just another newb...
« on: November 05, 2013, 01:38:24 pm »

Just another (kind of) newbie... From sunny Portugal.

Been lurking around... Heaps of precious information for a newcomer like me and a good all-around mood/feeling... Like it!!... Congrats on an excellent forum!!

I wrote kind of newbie because I had, many moons ago, some previous cracking (pun intended!) experience in models… Yep, you guessed... Airplanes...

All new to boat modelling and challenged by a friend, I'm building an RG65 (JIF2), using plans found online... Some pics...

This is fun but... What I like best in modelling is the scale(ish) build part... Whence a request for help...

I would like my next build to be this trawler... I think it's full of character!...

As you can see, I have this Model Boats - November 1988 magazine with the plan, but (as this is a 3 part feature) I'm lacking the December 88 and January 89 further articles (and plans if any)...

Tried to contact the editors for these old issues, but no luck... Sooo... Can any of you fine gents help me on this quest?... A copy/scan of these would be much appreciated... Thanks in advance!

Cheers  :-))

PS: Please don't mind my writing, english is not my native language...

Hi, I'm very new to model boats too and am reading with interest. Do you mind if I ask what is that attached to the left hand side of the larger servos me what it's purpose is?

I thought initially it was a micro switch, but I can't think why you would need one!

Its the sail sheet arm which controls the amount the sails are let out.

Ta Dougal, is that the gf arm on the servo? I meant the little electric thing stuck to the left side of the servo with the wires going into it.

Hi rk295,

Those are 2 micro potentiometers/trimmers... They are used to modify/hack a servo, as so you can get more servo arm travel than normal from a standard servo... You can see the hack procedure here: http://www.sailfootyuk.com/increase-sail-servo-throw.html, for example.

You can either use 2 resistors (and the amount of increased travel will always be the same, determined by the value of the resistors you put in there) or 2 potentiometers like I did (and you can adjust the travel angles at will).

Hope this was clear and helpful... From a newbie to another  %)
