Hi Pugwash,

Order the parts, sneakily paint them.

Show to SWMBO and say I have finished them.

I was very impressed by all of the parts made on the website and was struggling to make 2 x 3 pounder saluting
guns (the last parts to be made for my type 41 Frigate Leopard) I suggested to my wife that the two guns would make
an additional present for Christmas and I got a very sharp  reply about " you have made all the parts yourself, is it
model making if a machine makes all the bits - may as well get a plastic kit.
So do I try AGAIN to make these guns or do I order some and not tell her

Geoff
Tell her that someone off Mayhem sent them to you.  Which, technically, is the truth.

I think I will have one more go at the saluting guns and if they don't look okay
I will be putting in an order

Don't forget you'll need some for your Lion build as well Geoff.  <*<

The Lion build is no more. I had some eyesight problems and decided it might be possible to
start another model as big as Lion but I would never get it finished before my eyesight
deteriorated so I passed all the parts on to a friend in Glasgow who I might add is a far
better modelmaker than I am.
Leopard will be the last model I finish but at least I have a model of each ship in which I served

Sorry to hear about your eyesight problems. My Tiger build is on long term hold at the moment (along with a few others!), I just can't seem to find the time. Just doing little bits here and there.

Hi Marmoi,

My order of the 12lb. Guns arrived today with no problems.

As a bonus the parts are in those zip lock plastic bags?

They are good for keeping batteries etc. waterproof.

Mark on page 1 of this thread you said you were trying out naval figures in 1/96 and 1/72 scale.
I just wondered how these had gone.  I'm looking for sitting and standing figures in 1/96 with either
duffle coats or working rig - all wearing WW2 tin hats - usually try and have my models at Action stations
- just hoped these were a possibility

Hi,

Started to paint the 1/72 scale 12 Pounder Guns.

Firstly three minutes in the Sonic Cleaner. If you have not got one of these, you need to get one. The water was a grey colour at the finish.

Undercoated with Grey and it is surprising the amount of detail there is.

Same with the Tannoys, a lick of paint and the detail pops out.

There is a requirement for figures of all types, especially naval and my goal is to be able to supply figures for different navies and different time periods, but the modelling of them on computer is not easy.

Here is a picture of the MRS3 gun director in 1:96.

Once painted glazing can be cut and inserted in the top canopy.

This is the first of the small calibre/AA gun Kits

40mm Bofors MKVII, used by the Royal Navy and a few other navies from just after WWII until the 70's

Now  you're talking, going to need 1 or 2 of those for a Ton Class Minesweeper.

The items at Shapeways are virtually made to order.  The customer uses the images in the catalogue and then when he orders it, the item is made and shipped out.  they don't have the finished items sitting on shelves waiting to be sold!.  It a pretty effective system.

Here is a typical example of their excellent work.  Only days between special order and delivery. Five Stars !

The above set of six Nordenfelt guns as completed and painted by myself.
Apart from the paint job and bases they are exactly as shown on the Shapeways web site.
This photo is on their web site, http://www.shapeways.com/product/63N4QYJ6W/polyphemus-nordenfelt-4-barreled-x-6-1-64?li=shop-results&optionId=40192615

I am just guessing here, but the added cost to you, the final purchaser of doing a trial piece for every part, would just raise the price of the finished product, and just extend the timeframe before the part was available, the quality of the parts can be seen from the previous examples shown earlier in the thread, if the producer is confident that the part will print correctly, from previous experience, then the first buyer can often get a reduced cost by being the 'beta tester' (if I read the shapeways website correctly). the designer only gets paid when a product is printed, so he has to take a chance with his time spent CADding up an item, that people will want it and buy it.

Dave,

I'm only commenting here as a model boat enthusiast as well as a bit of a geek and 3D Printing enthusiast.

a 3D Model from these printers can take quite a long time to print (many hours) having to print out each one could be quite time consuming and prohibitive for a small business.
I'm not saying that they shouldn't show us what we are getting - I think it would be fantastic if they could.

But I do think that to do so would probably up the cost as well as lead times.
If anyone can upload a model (as we have seen in other threads here) and they were obliged to print every single one then they'd probably have to restrict who could upload, the might just end up printing terrible stuff that any old kid had uploaded?

Not trying to justify their business model but I think sometimes we have to accept there are limitations.

Marmoi shows his work on these pages and at model shows all around the country.  The quality of the items he offers is superb given the size of some of them.  His own model boats are often on show too and have few equals as regards finish and quality.

Dave makes a fair point.

All future post of available items will be accompanied by actual photos of of the items, not just the CAD mock ups.
