You could consider joining the MPBA countrywide club, currently £22 a year, but I dont know how this compares to individual quotes. Details on the MPBA Website

My public liability on the house insurance covers me for power boats as long as they are models. As so many people doubt that this is true, I checked with the insurance company and they assured me I was covered. In my case it is a steam launch.
Jerry.

Hi Jerry,

What you will find out is that BMPRS, MPBA, OMRA and individual insurance from Walker Midgley are all underwritten by Royal Sun Alliance.
I'm not up to date with the individual prices from Walker Midgley. So down to cost for all the cover you will need.
BMPRS: First year £12, renewal £9
MPBA: £22
OMRA: First year £25, renewal £15
What Jerry C wrote about, his household insurance is worth looking into, but check that the public liability cover  on your household policy is high enough for the waters you run on.

Does the insurance cover members wherever and whenever they sail?
Or is the insurance cover limited to events organised under the banner
of the aforementioned clubs?

Hi Ned,
The cover from BMPRS, MPBA and individual cover from Walker Midgley cover wherever and whenever you sail (no knowledge of what limitations on omra). My cover is from BMPRS, although I do not race I.C. engines now a days. I only run electric and steam boats these days.

I do all my insurance with the N.F.U. and asked if I was covered third party for my model boats the answer was yes and I am covered  for up to £5.000,000 and they have added a clause to my policy which states that model boats are covered. Never had a problem with N.F.U.when my dogs got out and wrote off a Morris Minor they paid up without question didn't pay the vets bill though that not covered by third party

bmprs and the mpba as far as im aware are the only uk societies that has in house written health and safety statements that comply with uk legislation and have designated individuals on the committees who deal with this area and have good record of safety

feel free to do your research first and ask questions !  both have people to help !

the other point to consider is what engine size your going to run currently and where !

there are in most polices restriction and cover is with permission to use the water

a very simple question , irrespective of which body you join to gain the " insurance cover " does it in fact cover you as an individual while operating your model alone , or is it only cover while your attending an organised club meeting ?

our insurance at bmprs covers members in there own right as an individual in a group and the public !

member  member to member and public

as for using a boat anywhere the policy states that with permission of the land / water owner or person who is authorised to give permission for use.

hope this helps !

Does it cover model yachts?

The cover from RSA policy covers you in UK  waters.
It covers you wherever and whenever you sail (not just at organised events under the association and society). So when you are out at your local water YOU ARE COVERED ! You are covered in your own right, member to member and member to public. As long as you have permission to use the water you are boating on. And yes your yacht is covered
The exception is down to limitations in the various associations and society's rules. Basically IC engine size and I think MPBA do not cover running in tidal and coastal waters.
Does this answer your question Ned ?

hi yes
we cover all models as long as they have relevant certification (ie boiler if steam )   if required

we do not cover jet turbine

the only stipulation is that it cannot carry a person or persons !

Thanks to Mark and Dave for your information.
The reason I ask is that although our club has insurance
for members on our lake I'm not sure if it extends to the rest of UK
Must find out.
I will probably be visiting a few venues this year and I also have a
New DF65 which I would like to take to a few races.
To get MYA insurance one has to join an affiliated club and then join the MYA.
They don't do individual membership.
I dont see the point of joining a club miles away from me just to get MYA insurance.
I think the BMPRS seems to suit me although the fastest model I have is a MFA Piranah
I built for my Grandson  {-) {-)

Thanks again for all your input.

Well, glad we've got the insurance question out of the way.
Can I just go back to Bob's (Younger at 70) comment on 5th Feb?
He casually mentions that his dogs wrote off a Morris Minor!
Bob, is canine joyriding widespread in your part of the world?
Do the dogs adapt the stolen car first, ie pedal extensions?  Or does one operate the pedals while the other steers?
Finally ...
Whatever possessed them to nick a Morris Minor?  A Golf GTI has a much bigger range of seat adjustment and is much easier to write off!

Cheers
Danny

At the time I had three G.S.D's they managed to open two doors inwards and run out of the property across the road into the village where somebody told them to go home which they did . but unfortunately as they run across the road they collided with a Morris Minor which had just been sold that afternoon and was due to be shipped to Germany on the following Friday. If my dogs are going to steal a car they have strict instructions not for it to be from a German or Japanese manufacturer which leaves them little choice but to go for a TVR or Morgan trust the forgoing answers most of Danny's questions as a matter of interest the combined weight of the three dogs in question was something like 120 kilos. Sadly all three have now passed over the rainbow bridge ( the last being just before I met Martin at MMM open day)
                                                  Cheers
Bob (Now enjoying a free TV licence, programs still rubbish though)

I have to say folks that for my part I am disappointed at the censorship applied to this topic.

There will be occasions when folks get passionate about their views. There will be occasions when contributors to threads will be challenged in view of what they have said.

I accept that for the forum managers it is a fine line to balance.

I think we need to be careful here not to stifle the opportunity of debate when circumstances present themselves in that way.

Passionate about insurance???????

Surely it's simply a question of whether one of the available policies meets your needs.

And don't forget that whatever the policy might say, the claims experience can be something else again!
