glue strength
« on: February 05, 2014, 01:13:19 pm »

Hi all, having just realised last night's overnight gluing was done in a hurry and inevitably I had made a mistake.  I had glued a piece of 1/4 inch thick obechi to the wrong side of the hull bottom.  It is about an inch wide and about 20 inches long.  I used 'builders' PVA from a tin.

I thought I could re-use it and so I then used a kitchen knife to separate the the 2 pieces, it was a little difficult to start and then it went OK but was hard work, until I got halfway.  This was almost impossible to part but eventually it gave and then it got easier again.

I had a think and realised this was the part clamped in the vice and the rest was held together to dry with the usual assortment of clamps and bulldog clips.

So it makes you think about how the glue can do an excellent job if allowed to!

I think I shall be buying some screw type clamps in the future to supplement the spring clamps.

Regards Roy
