Ive always found that plastic is cleaned well with diluted floor   cleaner.
The one I use is called Handy Andy in Australia.
I think it is an Ammonia based cleaner non abrasive, just liquid.

If it has been finished with Polyurethane, that may be the cause of the yellowing.

If white plastic has gained a suntan, it is likely to be more than skin deep.  Bleach might restore the whiteness, but there is the probability that it won't be quite the same plastic afterwards.  A new paint job is probably the best way.  As long as the result is a durable finish, there is no real "best".  The final result is most affected by the preparation.

How about one of those cleaners that you can use to whiten up modern plastic window frames and sills

Martin said yellowed not yellow!

Yellowing of previously white plastic does indicate that the material is beginning to break down. This is often caused by the UV in sunlight but can be just the inherent nature of a material which is made from hydrocarbons. As has been discussed on other topics in the past, it is a moot point just how long the plasticard in our models will last. Todays materials are better than the first examples of plasticard which often only seemed to last a few years but I suspect that many of the models we are building now will self destruct eventually which is why I prefer to use wood where possible. If you do use plasticard, or indeed any form of plastic then it is wise to paint it to protect it from UV.

Paint it as Malcolm advised. This will shield it from UV, which will go a long way to preventing further degradation.

Hi, going along with Colin Bishop, I was talking to a very good modeller a while back and he will not used plasticard or similar. Being a retired industrial chemist he stated that the approx life is 20years. Have you ever wondered why items drop off for no good reason. I always paint the inside as well to keep the air off the joints, hope it helps, nemesis
