Brushless for SLIPWAY TAMAR
« on: March 10, 2014, 06:34:16 pm »

Hi all,
Can anyone advise me on what type and size of brushless motors I should be putting in a Slipway Tamar and can you get matched motors and ESC
This will be my first venture with this type of propulsion.

regards, Gerard

Hi gerard, I am building a Model Slipway Tamar for a friend in the boat club.
It will be running with the following.
2 Turnigy D 3536/6 motors,  1250kv 2 Hobbyking 90amp boat ESC,s
powered by 2 11.1v, 5000mah lipo,s 1 for each motor
turning 2 contra rotating 42mm 3 blade brass props.
Motors & ESC,s from Hobbyking.

hope this helps you

john44, why are you using 90A ESCs with 35A motors?

Furthermore it's a 5mm shaft, the MS shafts in the kit are 4mm.

I'm building a Slipway Tamar at the moment, with the following options.

Overlander Thumper V2 3548/05 motors, 710w 900kv
Hawk 60A ESCs
40mm 5 bladed brass props
And battery choice currently undecided whether 4S 7200mah is going to be a bit too fast, or just right. Going to spend out for the 4S anyway because extra throttle that I don't use translates itself into longer runtimes.

That's not tested in the water yet, but it's the same setup used by another modeller (pipster I think) on this boat, only with 10 volts I think, so 14.8 volts will be a bit faster again. I'm trying to get the bow up and out of the water like has been seen with a few models.

Thanks to you both, that will give me something to go by, will let you know what I go for, but that will be some time yet.

Hi McGherkin,
I am using the 90amp ESC,s for peak current & in case I use a more power hungry motor set up.The 5mm shaft is no problem, just buy the 5mm coupling for the motor spindles.

I ran both a 1:12 and a 1:16 Tamar with 70 amp brushless Esc's and yet both planed at high speed when fitted with 20amp fuses.

The extra amperage in the esc is irrelevant if the motor does not use it, but often these more powerful ESCs cost no more and have a better choice of programming options as well.

All my brushless setups have the 70 amp Escs, simply because I find them easy to programme and there is no real chance of reaching their power limit, even if measured in Chinese Amps  %%

What motors etc were you running with the 1/16th one? And any video?

I started out with some brushed motors in my Slipway Tamar i was disappointed with the turn of speed.
Just before Christmas I went out and got Two Turnigy D3542/5 1250 Kv motors. 660 watts of power each !
Wow the boat never goes on full power as it tries go leap out of the water.
I run it  as follows
two 50 amp fwd Rev Hobbyking esc.
two 11.1 lipos one for each esc / motor.
two Turnigy D3542/5 motors. These are on ebay from a chap in WGC Herts. PM me and i will send you his link.
Same props that come in the kit.

My boat was in the water for over an hour last Sunday and the esc nor the motor got above hand hold heat. The battery alarms (low lipo charge ) never went off.  How much fun do you want?
These motors are so good I have just fitted one to a Atlantic rib i'm building which pulls it along very nicely. I took me over a year wasting time with other motors and stuff but since I've fitted the motors i have a smile on my face every time i run my boat.

I cannot remember the brushless motors used in the 1:16 Tamar, but Bill D203's setup matches my experience and I would go with that.

These are the ESC i used. Mine work A1 but a friend had trouble with his not going into rev. There is a program card for this unit but as I said mine worked out of the box. Oh and by the way I don't have the water cooling connected and they NEVER get warm.

They are around $19.50 + P&P.

Hi Gerard,

I know I'm late to the party but McGherkin is right about my set up.  The boat is still far from finished but it's run a couple of times and went pretty well/fast on 9.6v NiMH cells.  That said, there's more than one way to skin the proverbial and Bill's set up looks good.  His running times far surpass my 1/16 Trent on brushed motors!

Props wise, I've been told by the shop that the brushless motors will turn pretty much any prop so I went for 5 bladed as per the full size boat.

Hi All
I've been reading this subject with great interest, I have just bought the "Slipway Tamar" and brushless motors as suggested by Bill D203, My big question is how to wire them up so that both motors run on the 1 throttle stick. I have the 2 motors, 2 speed controllers, and 2 lipo's 1 for each controller.
I would be grateful for any guidance

No Problem Mike. A simple Y lead to both ESC from the throttle channel on your RX. you should be able to pick one up from your local model shop if not on the web.
You need to take one of the red wires out or you will have two Becs working which dose not seem to work to well. All you need to do is take a pin and life up the clip in the plug and pull the red wire on one of the ESC back.
Any pics of your build ? :-))

My motors and esc are still going strong. You have to use the throttle stick with care but when you need power you will have it to use.
Enjoy building it and if i can help out im only to happy to help. :-)

Slightly Lower Kv motors if you have to restrict your throttle stick movement %)

No Sorry there is not. Also i have sold it as I needed to make some money etc. However i can tell you it is a Models by design FG hull and I lost interest in building it. A fellow club member finished it off for me. It was in Model Marine Mag write up about Wicky park mayhem weekend .
It was a sod to build as I needed a lot of R&D work and by the time I got it right Motors etc I wanted to start again with a new Hull. maybe this winter I will have a look  at building Mk 2
