We are extremely grateful to ALL members who contribute to this Forum and we certainly do not differentiate between their addresses.

The situation is quite grim Gentlemen, so all assistance is appreciated.

Thank you

News that libraries are to save UK web content for posterity made me wonder what happens to all our input to this forum. Does it stay here for ever or does it slowly slip away over time? There is a lot of very useful stuff on here it would be a shame to lose it.
Jerry.

Maybe you should offer it to the Bodlean library? I've got stuff from them before now.
Jerry.

Martin, I spoke to the Bodlean and they said they were only going to use the gathered info and that the British library, the National library of Scotland and the National library of Wales were going to actually store the data. So I spoke to the British library and customer services said they had only heard about it this morning and so asked me to email the question. This is what I asked.

Sirs, I saw this on the news today and as I am a contributor to modelboatmayhem which contains a wealth of (to us model makers) knowledge and ship information I wondered how information was to be gathered. It seems quite possible that all our stored wisdom could be lost by one catastrophic crash of the website or web. We have had several near misses in the recent past. Do you intend to collect everything or only data that is offered to you? I ask on behalf of the owner of the website and several of its contributors.
Sincerely,
Jerry Cartwright
Caernarfon.

Lets see what happens. All the best,
Jerry.

People like me frequently have their computer on all day and permanently logged in to several websites. This shows up as being online but doesn't mean I'm looking at the computer! I just check it from time to time.

Reminds me of a story of my father repairing a TV. Put it all back together again, switched on and the picture was upside down, took it apart and reversed the coils, reassembled it. Still upside down  >:-o Tried again, and reversed the coils, reassembled it.   This time it was OK.  %%
He found out later that the Beeb had been broadcasting the picture upside down during a science lesson.  :embarrassed:

Right now Mayhem has 82 Guests and 22 registered Users.  Hopefully a higher proportion of guests will  register to see the full forum content.

I tend to have my computer on for much of the day, with tabs open for email news and Mayhem.  I keep popping back to read new posts.  As a result I have not had to re login in for ages, the cache remembers me.  Although the header says I have been logged in for over 18 days, I haven't really.  I do shut down at least twice a day.

It's not entirely clear what '"guest" actually are, it seems they could be virtually anything... search hits, 'net robots', stats bots, word trawlers, data harvesters... anything.  {:-{

I'm logged in all the time but the time counter only counts when I'm actually using it. I use iPhone 99.9% of the time.
