Jacky's launch. Coal boiler.
« on: June 13, 2014, 07:59:37 am »

Hello! My friend Jacky built (for the first time :-)) ) a clinker launch that works with coal.
He does not have anybody around here to ask some questions and help him out.
So I proposed to him to try with "the good ol' Mayhem forum" on which, he'll get all the answers he wants.
I have seen some good "calibers" around here. %%

The first question he has:
- Does anybody can tell the maximum autonomy he has with a 2 Liters boilers in such a situation.
Jacky gets around 1/2 hour full running with on load of coal, but he is sure that he can get more autonomy, and he wishes to communicate with someone who has the same project.
I pass on the link of his launch construction.
He does not speak English, mine is poor, but we'll manage to communicate:  no problem! O0
Thanks for your help. (allow sometime between the answers please)

A lovely project!

Sorry that I can't help with your questions - there are others here who certainly can - but here's a working link to the boat as the above one doesn't work.

Hello!
Thanks gentlemen.
This is what I call efficiency! :-))
To answer to Derek, I pass the message to Jacky. He should register on the forum tonight and with the excellent translator you give, he will be able to communicate directly.
No doubt about it.
Cheers.

KBIO….

•   here is the link to the Jacky’s boiler build…again easily translates to English
•   on page 9, Jacky advises that he achieves 45 minutes steaming time on one boiler of coal/anthracite
•   during this time his boiler feed pump replaces 1000ml of water to the boiler
•   to me …45 minutes operation is brilliant!
•   bring the vessel back to shore……
•   feed the boiler more anthracite …….feed the make up tank more water….have a coffee & steam out again  :-))

Reading the translation on page 41 of 46 of Jacky's French article, the word "tarpaulin" keeps cropping up.

This reminded me, many years ago, of an experience with a power station document translated from the French which made no sense. Investigating the translation with a French engineer, it turned out the word "tarpaulin" meant the boiler drum - the explanation was that on the old farm wagons (think of the American wagon trains) the tarpaulin over the wagon made the shape of a drum - from which the French derived their word for the "boiler drum".

Hi Jacky,

Thanks for explaining "tarp".

I use the water from the pond (environment?) - the feed water pump sucks it through a lawn mower fuel filter to remove any detritus before it goes to the boiler.

See  http://www.mister-solutions.co.uk/products/in-line-fuel-filters-280-c/1/1/20

You can see the filter in the "Edwardian Steam launch" thread.

All the best

Ian

can be amateurs in neighbouring countries?
