As Bill said sounds like the prop, try a four blade courser pitch, something else to consider is cavitation your prop is quite near the surface so it may be sucking air under the transom when going astern, and when you go forward the bow goes up and the stern goes down making the prop lower in the water, you could try a bit more ballast and raise the water line slightly, just a thought

Joe.

Most Springers bury the bow when
going ahead.
If you have one that burys the stern
please tell us all the secret.

I have no knowledge of springers, it was just a suggestion what could be happening with the prop based on most of the boat sailing characteristics I have had, as I said "it was just a thought"

Springers are well known for submarine tendencies.
Many have tried to keep the bows up without success.
Thats why your post seemed a bit strange Joe.

Agree the prop is not the best. Try same size in brass, expensive but....

What motor are you using.   I've looked at your film and noticed it seemed down on power.  There seemed to be little disturbance behind the boat when moving.

Not actually sure??? it's a standard silver can 540 I think???

It was in my late fathers parts box already bolted to the gearbox....

Do you think I should bin the gearbox?

I am a little lost on brushed motors....  {:-{

Try a direct drive.  The video shows very poor Springer performance.   540 motor is good.

Standard 540 can motor, 6 volts, 3 blade brass 40mm prop.  No too bad in reverse , about 40% speed.

Had not realised you used a gearbox, that could well be your problem.

I used the gearbox as that was on the drawing I used.

I'll fit the motor direct later and see how that goes....

Many thanks guys!

hi Dave
good video, it would seem the prop is not revving that much, when I put Zulu in the bath at full throttle the bath turns in to a bubbling caldron, she has a 480 motor and 35mm prop direct drive, it depends on what speed you want really, I never run at full throttle I prefer to run at scale speed, but it's good to know I can move out of the way of another boat if necessary .   :-))

Then I'll go for a metal prop and so on....

Ok,

I pulled out the gearbox and made a small bush for the coupling and it's all back together again.

Here's a little video of it in the test tank (the bath)  :}

I'll take it to the lake tomorrow and post another video....
