« on: July 26, 2014, 10:07:20 am »

Hi there

Am just starting an wonder whether there is a section anywhere with hints an tips for us beginners? Im just starting this;
http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/corel_scotland.html

The instructions are ok but no basic starter hints - things like how long  to leave to dry etc...

You're gonna need to patrol around the glue section.

Careful now.     {-) {-)

The other section worth reading is the Masterclass where  "how it's done" is taken to the Nth degree.

All the best

A quick Google found a few "not progressed very far" build logs for this model. But if all the contents are present, and if you follow the instructions (where they make sense), have an area where you can store tools and the build, and - most importantly - "measure twice, cut once" then you should be able to crack on.

The forum here is manned 24/7, pretty much: never feel shy to ask a question! No matter what people might say, we were all beginners once.  O0

Using the search feature on the forum comes up with a lot of info as well.

And I'll second the Masterclass builds.  Truly inspiring, very detailed, and a great read as well.

If I were building a framed and planked wooden boat, I'd use an Alphatic wood glue, strong bond and fairly quick drying and if you don't yet have any small clamps/spring clips, you can't have too many, you can usually get them cheap at a town market, if there's one near you, also map marker pins are very handy to hold pieces in place where you can't use a clip, you can normally get these at a stationary shop, the main thing is to take your time and understand each stage before you do anything, and above all enjoy it  :-) and don't be shy about asking questions we all did a first model.  :-))

In the kitchen:

1. If your favourite knife has lost it's edge, sharpen it.

2. Remember to run edge down something wood spoon to remove metal 'debris'.

3. Remember you've Just sharpened your knife and it will behave a little differently now.

4. Don't squeeze Limes if you've just cut your finger!    {:-{

  • Study any build instruction and plans very carefully before cutting anything.
  • Measure 3 times, cut once. Dont cut on the dining table without plenty of protection on the table.
  • Make sure all cuts are 90 degrees.
  • Do a dry fit before gluing anything.
  • If building using plasticard, use the brush on liquid poly cement out of bottle rather than a tube. The joints will be cleaner, dry quicker and look better.
  • If something isnt working after a couple of attempts, put it down and leave it for 10 to 20 minutes then have another go.
