I always volunteered to be the On Call Manager xmas day, boxing day, new years day and Easter. Still able to stay at home and do as I please (apart from drinking) and have a days leave in lieu as well as my on call allowance. Chances of actually being called out to attend an incident at one of our hospitals was remote if non existent but did have to put up with the occasional mind blowing call.
Easter Monday last year - 'Hello is that the on call manager'
Yes
Its the unit Manager of xxxxxxx. Can I have authority to call the maintenance people out - we have an emergency estates issue that needs attention? (yes emergency was the word they actually used)
Whats the emergency?
The soap dispenser in the staff rest room toilet is broken.
Isn't there a Tesco Express directly opposite you?
Yes why?
Well rather than call out maintenance why don't you take a couple of quid from petty cash and buy a bottle of liquid soap to see you thru until tomorrow?
Oh I never thought of that. That's a good idea. I knew it was worth contacting you. Thanks.
Mind boggled. And I had to write it up as an incident.
Retirement couldn't come soon enough this year!
