Giant models
« on: August 24, 2014, 05:29:02 pm »

I’ve always fancied building a model that was large enough to get into.

I’m thinking of something a bit like a small canoe-sized boat where my body is low enough in the hull so that I become the majority of the ballast.

I weigh around 85kg so the lighter the construction of the model, the smaller the overall size would be.

85kg is approximately 85 litres displacement. It would need to be 400mm wide to accommodate my hips
Assuming a minimum of 100mm draught, then a length of just over 2m should do it.

I suspect that it could fit into a large car……   :-)

Has anyone on here done this?

Yes they still do it at Peasholm Park in Scarborough there is a naval battle enactment a few times a month during the summer, each ship is controlled by a man lying inside with the superstructure placed over him, they also control the pyrotechnics, the photos make the ships look small but they are 8 to 9 foot long, I've seen it twice over the years while staying near there, it's done very well.  :-))

Awesome!

That's the type of thing!

I was thinking of a boat design that was 'all hull' to save on weight & complexity - maybe HMS Warrior - there's not a lot of superstructure and it is a fairly simple hull shape

I should add, it's only the larger ships that have a man in them, the smaller destroyers etc. Are standard RC but still carry pyrotechnics

It's difficult to judge the size of the boats - need to see them with some context like people near them.

The last time I was there, a good few years ago, I was standing near the "Docks" where they get the boats ready I expressed my interest in model boats to one of the guys and he was kind enough to show me the set up, not at all comfortable he lays on his back with a joystick in each hand at his sides the superstructure is lowered over him and has a periscope built in the structure so he can see forward.

Yes - That's what I'm thinking of. A bit of padding would make it comfortable enough - I'm thinking of 12v battery & motor - the battery between my knees and the motor under my shoulders. As you say, a periscope or little cctv camera for viewing.

I guess it would be like laying in a floating coffin.

HMS Warrior @ 1/48 scale more-or-less fits the bill.

Wow - the cross section showing the person inside - those boats must be huge!

I'm thinking much smaller - practically as small as possible, a bit like a canoe.

Does anyone have photos of the insides of this style of boat?

How about These.

Seen at Ellesmere Port.

Both of these Have Human Crew, on the paddle boat you looked through the bridge area.

Now that aircraft carrier is impressive!

Way too big though - at that size, I could live aboard!  {-)

The paddle boat looks more like the sort of thing - very nice.

Has anyone seen a Minuet yacht? They're about 6' long and can fit into an estate car.

Hi Plastic,

If you make one, make sure you can cope with a capsize!

The model of HMS Invincible is 32ft long.   It was a Royal Navy recruiting stage prop that was being replaced by more modern techniques, video, IT graphics etc and so on.  Converted from a waterline model that was carried around the UK to shows and events  on an articulated truck for over 30 years.   A full hull was added and is now carried on launching  trailer pulled by a Ford Transit van.  It has to be considered as a man carrying powered craft.  Powered by a 5 h.p.  Mercury 2stroke it has been timed by GPS at 7kts.  Could be for sale , PM me if interested.    There is a Manned Model Ships International  Yahoo group with some ideas.  Canoe size rather limits a model`s sea-worthyness

Stability of converted canoes is the major problem. These Dutch fun boat that you wear rather than sit in have a better draft and look a bit more solid in the water.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I'm thinking something as small as possible mainly for transportation reasons. HMS Invincible is awesome, but where would I put it? Everything becomes difficult as size increases. You have storage problems, manual handling problems, sailing waters need vehicle access which limits where you can use it and they also cost an absolute fortune to build!

Most of the boats in the pics are going to be a problem to handle out of the water - mainly because of size & weight.

That's the reason that I'm thinking of something like HMS Warrior - if you look at the ship, you have a simple, straight hull with a flat deck. It has very little detail on the deck and practically no superstructure. The masts/funnels can be demountable and the materials & technology for them are cheap & light.

A tanker or freighter would be on the cards for the same reasons.

I would probably be looking to make the hull from carved blue-foam board sandwiched in fibreglass/carbon fibre.

I would hope the finished boat would be similar in weight to a canoe and able to be moved on a trolley from the car to the water by one person (like the Minuet yachts).

The theory is that my body weight would be the ballast to get down to the waterline - like a canoe.

Anything too big/heavy won't be practical for me to build as I can't store it - I'd like something that can go on a shelf or hang in the garage - not something the size of a car!

Hi,

Check your local Maritime laws as in some countries the ship would need to be registered.

I don't think it would need to be on the Lloyd's Register.  :D

If it is powered and manned you will need to get licence for places like Lake Windermere and most marinas.  Transport just like a sailing dinghy.    Some nice models in a French theme park for kids  (and people like us)   A very simple ply flat bottom submarine is (was ?) kitted by Kittywake Boats here in UK. Easily car top-able but I`d have reservations in these trigger happy days, very sinister and  "potential threat" looking. They also do a frigate and a King George V battleship a bit like the Peaseholme Park jobs. His full-size sailing yacht are superb.

If the paddle steamer is from the late North West Model Boat Club builder - that was made from breakfast cereal boxes - hundreds of them and it took up his whole front room - was shown on look northwest years ago - and reshown in a recent program.

The builder was the late Bill Wilkinson from the NW, the tug is called "Cracker".    How about a simple Springer type push-boat ?    Slab sided , easy build , car roofable.  At least one has been done in the USA.   I started one a couple of years ago but health/finances/her have all postponed work, maybe next spring...for a Springer, very apt. {-)

Hi Plastic,

Several people in America got pulled up as they had no safety gear on board... :police:

Same here in Oz, if you are in a boat lifejackets and safety gear must be carried... <*<

Before spending anything on such a project,
find somewhere to use it with permission, access and
insurance.
Most lakes have bylaws that need addressing.
Canals need a licence and safety certificates.
I wont mention the sea as there are enough idiots
requiring rescue and You have too much sense to
be one of those
