Any of Glynn Guest's designs...I built one, and if I can scratch build one ( in wood...) then anybody can.

You should decide what kind of boat you would like, first.   There are many simple plans available and choosing the kind of boat that interest you will help you decide.  Visit your local model boat club and make yourself known.  If they're anything like the one I belong to there'll be someone with a free plan from Model Boat  or Model Marine International that they'll never get around to building.

A springer tug is a good starting point. You will learn a lot about techniques, materials, glues finishes etc along with installation of running gear.

Plus, you can build something unique by designing a superstructure to your own taste.

I would recommend something of hard chine construction.

Vic Smeed plans remain the best in my opinion, they are well drawn, easy to build and Vic designed models that looked as good as they ran.

I totally agree with subculture..................I think that most people have at some time in their lives when starting out on model boat scratch building either come across or used a vic smeed set of plans.......I certainly did as a 12 year old boy and built a Bustler tug..........easy to understand good info and they really are nice models to sail...........

I am 63 now and would still use a Vic smeed plan should I want to build something of interest.............so that speaks a lot for his plans.
