Colwyn Bay - Mayor's Cup Regatta
« on: October 23, 2014, 02:10:25 pm »

Via email to Mayhem...

Hi

Colwyn Bay Model Boat Club are pleased to confirm that our Mayor's Cup Regatta will be held on Sunday 19th July, 2015 at our lake behind Colwyn Bay Civic Offices, LL18 8AR and we would be delighted if your club could join us.  The arrangements will be broadly similar to previous years.

All model boat enthusiasts are most welcome to come along , either individually or as a Club, and we will happily provide space for gazebos and display tables.  We can supply a limited number of pre-booked trestle tables if necessary.  There will be reserved space right behind your gazebo/display for club parking and picnics etc.   Refreshments are available throughout the day, or you can simply bring your own.

In 2014  fourteen clubs from across the U.K. attended and provided displays together with another 7 individual displays.

This event is now widely publicised in local papers and on street banners and attracts a large number of local visitors and holidaymakers, especially since there is plenty of free parking within yards of the lake and there is no admission charge.

The very popular Commodore's Regatta Competition will be held for visitors again this year and we may also soon announce a completely different type of competition too.

"The Commodore's Regatta Trophy" - is open to any visitor who puts a model boat on display and simply fills in an application form on arrival.  There are 2 classes to the competition  Class 1 - models judged whilst sailing on the lake and Class 2- static display models.  Models can be entered into both competitions

The competition Classes will be judged by our Commodore and two other judges to be selected by the visiting boat clubs.

Invites have been sent to even more traders this time, but we do not, as yet, know which of them will attend.

Clubs wishing to reserve space for a Gazebo, or requiring further information etc should contact tour Club Secretary, Alan Woodward by email - secretary@colwynbaymbc.co.uk

Photos of previous Regattas can be viewed here ........... http://tiny.cc/l3l6nx

We hope your Club can join us at the Regatta.

Further information will be provided nearer to the date, please let us know if you definitely will not be able to attend

Regards
Alan Woodward - Club Secretary.

p.s.  If you know of other clubs, or traders that might be interested in coming to the Regatta, please forward this email to them.

Re: Colwyn Bay - Mayor's Cup Regatta - THE BODGER'S CHALLENGE
« Reply #2 on: April 26, 2015, 07:41:26 pm »

We try to create entertainment for public visitors to our Regatta and have a new competition that is harder than it first appears and is great fun.

We lay down the Bodger's Challenge to all the clubs and individuals attending on 19th July .........

The competition winner is the qualifying craft that crosses on the water surface from one side of the lake to the other in the shortest possible time without external intervention.

As far as practicable the race will be held with a following wind.
More than one person may launch the craft, but the model may not receive any assistance or guidance after leaving the start point. If no boat reaches the far bank, then the one getting closest to it will be declared the winner.

There are few restrictions on the design of the craft, but construction must comply with all of the following

1. The majority of the vessel shall be scratch built with hand tools; the use of lathes, milling machines and 3d printers is specifically prohibited.

2. The craft may be constructed from any materials, but only a single item may be used “off the shelf  “  in building the model.  e.g. a propeller, or a sail, or a plastic bottle, etc.       ( Although any number of plastic bottle sections, or whatever,  can be included  under the classification “ materials” )

3. You are permitted unlimited use of purchased fixings such as screws, bolts, glues, adhesive tape, string, rope etc.

4. No off the shelf, or pre-assembled propulsion modules or systems are allowed and the vessel shall not carry a battery, any combustible fuel, nor a live creature. (especially not a hamster in a wheel ! )

A power source can be used to allow potential energy to be stored in the boat prior to launch, for example, to get a flywheel spinning up to speed, but the power source must be removed at the start of the race.

5.  The vessel shall not exceed 1.5 metres in any dimension.

6. There may be an additional prize for ingenuity

If you can't join us, the Challenge is great fun at any club meeting.

We were honoured to host twelve visiting clubs today, each with some magnificent models.

We always start with grandiose plans; the gods laugh, we struggle through the self inflicted Mayhem ( we learned that here !) and in the end everyone has a great time.

The event would be nothing without the visiting clubs, who know before they arrive that the Timetable is of no consequence at all.

Thank you all for giving the people on the north Wales coast a great day out.

P.s  The next Mayor's Cup Regatta is on Sunday 24th July, 2016, everyone is welcome.

We will put some photos up once we have had a rest

I am not sure.

He was in a car with his wife at a service station near Sheffield and asked me if I knew how to get onto the M1 south bound. By the sheerest chance, I was up in Sheffield at a wargames show with my client helping on his stand, and we had stopped for fuel. Tony asked me as I got back into the van and as we spoke, I saw the signal flags on hs cruisers! We got talking and the rest is history. He followed us out onto the M1 link road and I was just wondering if he got home alright.

Sorry, but we had a number of people visiting with large warships yesterday.  I have not heard from any of our visitors about problems on the journey home.
