This is an amazing project.

I can't wait to see the finished wheelhouse once it is delivered to Gareth.

Glad you all like it so far.

At the rear of the wheelhouse is kept a basket stretcher, normally stowed against the cabin wall BUT I wanted it in the ready for use position so a suport frame was made and fixed to the floor.

The basket stretcher was made and strapped in place.

The emergency oxygen bottle was added and the First Aid grab bag put in place.

The air intake trunking on the back wall was made along with the filter panels that fit on the outside on either side of the door.

Painted and fitted onto the wall and the outside panels temporarily in place.

Grab handrails and fire extinguisher have been added along with the ones at the front hatch.

Also fitted the several blackout curtains, difficult to see as they are black against black walls, that divide the wheelhouse when needed.

Bringing thing up to date......

Most lifeboats have a mascot on board. Usually either a teddy bear or a knitted crewman. I usually chose to give the boat a teddy bear as in this case.

1" high teddy as purchased from a car boot sale for 50p.

The front of his scarf has been ground down and a lifejacket added from Milliput.

Painted and ready to go.

Fitted in place to keep an eye out for any mutiny amongst the crew.

The Helmsman has forgotten to drink his coffee.

This afternoon was spent persuading the extra wiring needed for the upper steering position and mast into the conduits. It would have been an easier job knitting steel wool into a bike!!!!

Things will be OK as long as the labels don't fall off !!!!!

Spent the past couple of days trying to burn off the ends of my fingers again!!

This time it was building the mast for the Arun. A pair of side sections were made from brass tube. Tube was used to reduce weight and allow the wiring to be threaded up the legs for the radar and mast lighting.

The two sections were then joined using a solder with a lower melting point, to prevent the whole thing falling apart, to produce the basic lower structure.

The upper mast section was cut from sheel brass and again soldered using different melting point solders.

The two sections were joined using a third, lower melting point solder.

The top aerial section was made as a separate unit and glued into the top tube, the whole mast given a coat of primer and then a coat of white.

This will be fixed in place when the wheelhouse upper deck is fixed in place.

The wheelhouse upper deck has been glued in place ( Gorilla WHITE glue, just as strong but no foaming to deal with) and the wires threaded through from the conduit beams to the top surface.

Now the glue is dry all the windows and doors have been sealed over to prevent dust getting inside.

Whilst waiting for the glue to dry I made the radar scanner unit. This is built around a micro servo which has been modified to rotate continuously when switched on.

Fitted onto the main platform of the mast ready for wiring up.

I have also made the D/F loop from heavy duty electrical single strand copper wiring, wound into rings and soldered together.

Painted and mounted on the upper mast platform.

Had some flu type bug over the past couple of days so not felt like doing much.

However the mast now has working radar, mast head navigation light, upper deck illumination light and flashing blue light.

This will be fixed in place and mated with the wiring already fitted when the outside of the wheelhouse is done.

Back to work on the Arun wheelhouse.

The hatch covers on the front bins that will hide the batteries and the switches for the functions in the wheelhouse have been made and are now ready for detailing.

All the masking tape that was keeping the dust out of the wheelhouse has been removed and replaced with thin brown parcel tape. This will leave a much smaller "step" in the paint when the strucutre is sprayed, first with white primer then the orange.

The weather was perfect for spraying today with nice warm sunshine and most importantly NO WIND !!

This allowed me to give the wheelhouse two coats of white primer, it was brought indoors into the warmer air to allow the paint to flash off between coats.

In fact the weather was so good I even managed to give it one of the three coats of orange late in the afternoon. It will now be left for 24 hours before the final coats are done. Then it will be remove the masking and pray that the seals prevented any paint getting inside!!!!

Whilst waiting for the orange paint to harden off I built the rear steps for the superstructure.

These were made from 1.5mm sheet styrene.

This is where they fit on the wheelhouse rear face, above the emergency salvage pump bin.

One coat of primer, two coats of orange and the anti-slip pads later and they are now ready to fit.

Now the orange paint is hardening off a start on adding the parts made earlier has begun. The masking over the window openings will be removed in a couple of days or so and I pray no paint has got inside or it's a total disaster!!

The intakes and filters on both the port and starboard sides of the wheelhouse have been fitted in position.

The two long filters on the rear face either side of the access door have also been fixed as well as the step unit made yesterday. The salvage pump bin will be fixed onto the deck of the clients Arun when the finished project is delivered.

Beautiful job Mike.  I just love watching skillful modellers at work  O0 .

A novice's question - do you just glue your fittings such as the steps onto the painted surface, or do you scrape the paint off first?  If you scrape, I am impressed that you manage that without leaving little bits of white showing round the edge - or is it touched up after fitting?  Intrigued to know!

Small items are just glued onto the paint, that's where you find out if your paint job is up to scratch and firmly fixed to the wheelhouse!! I also use an industrial grade cyanoacrylate glue (superglue!!) called MitreFix that is used in the furniture industry and comes with its own activator.

The main support for the steps is an angle bracket under the lower platform. This is not painted at the back and the paint is removed where this fits. I remove the paint to within a couple of millimeters of the shape and if any white does show then a quick touch up with a fine brush solves that problem.

This is done for all the bits I add. :-))

The side step to get onto the main access ladder has been made , painted and fitted. Crew now don't have to jump over 2ft up in the air to go topsides!!

The MOB cranes have been started by brazing the two arms together and then adding the other parts with lower temperature solders.

The positions for these have been worked out on the sides.

Where the cranes fit onto the sides the paint has been removed ( see the post a couple above this one!) to allow the MitreFix a good grip.

After painting the cranes are now mounted on the wheelhouse and will be detailled shortly.

The door frame has now been fixed onto the rear of the wheelhouse.

The door has also been fitted into the frame.

And YES it does open and shut.

The mast made earlier has now been fixed onto the roof of the wheelhouse and the wiring from the wheelhouse threaded up the mast legs and joined to the wiring already on the mast. Now all the functions can be controlled via the switches that will be fitted into the rope bins at the front of the wheelhouse.
