I have made a start on fitting the flush glazing into the frames. This is the set for the front of the wheelhouse.

The masking over the front windows has been removed and it appears to have done its job of keeping the orange paint out of the wheelhouse  :-))

Windows fitted in place, just a little touching up around the frames to do.

I have also fitted the two small windows either side of the door into the wheelhouse.

The Port and Starboard sets of windows will be done over the next few days.

The screenwiper boxes have been made, painted and fitted. They are fitted in a straight line despite how they look in th picture!!

The covers for the front rope bins that will contain all the switches and function batteries have now been detailed and painted ready to fit .

Todays 'little' job has been to work out the positions of the stanchions and the runners for the small boat on the upper deck.

The runners for the boat have also been set up ready to braze together.

The main Y boat support rails have been brazed together, trimmed to fit, primed and painted and fitted onto the roof along with the forward bow chock.

From my trawls of the car boot sales I have a hard plastic ( it's styrene) toy inflatable that is the size of a Y boat, within a couple of mm or so, to use on the Arun.

After removing the moulded on details, filling holes, priming and painting the boat is ready to have its cover fitted and strapped down onto the rails.

Still watching this super detailed build   O0 ..one question....does the inflatable sit on axis with the vessel?

Image 'wheelhouse 135'...shows the masking tape for the support brackets for the inflatable angled off axis [aft end of supports angled to port] which sort of threw me :o

In image 'wheelhouse 132', the vertical pleated filter elements in the two vertical exhaust/inlet vents [on deck level on either side of the companionway door] ..... look blocked  :embarrassed: ...is this just masking material?......

Again I find the level and depth of detail amazing  :-)) .... Derek

Hi Derek, glad you like the build so far.  :-))

The Y boat sits at an angle to the centre line on the full size boat and the rails are offset to starboard as well as angled. I think this is a legacy of the early Aruns where the boat was launched with a davit and not  slid down rails and over the stern as in the later boats. The rails were fitted instead of the davit as the stresses and strains on the superstructure at the rear starboard corner were causing problems with the integrity of the wheelhouse.

The filters are just that, filters,  not just air intakes. Just like the air filter element on your car. They look much better in the flesh than the pictures. {-)

Just spent the last couple of days trying to bend and fit brass rods into the correct shapes for the rails on the upper deck.

The rails on the rear steps needed four different melting point solders to construct .

Overall view from the stern with the Y boat on its rails.

Just need to bend up and fit the backrest for the helmsman then it's spend a couple of days painting them all white and touching up the orange paint .

The backrest for the helmsman has been made and fitted, even managed to get the first coat of paint on it.

The bottom sections of the main aerials have also been made and fitted along with the upper supports connecting them to the mast.

Now it's on with the painting!!

Finally plucked up the courage to remove all the masking from the window openings today.  The result is a success, no paint has got inside the wheelhouse !!  :-)) :-))

The glazed window frames have been fitted as well as the downleads from the aerials into the cabin roof.

Made and fitted the parts for the upper steering position.

Marked out the side grills that cover the fuel filler/vent pipe on each side.

After a few hours filing the covers are done, and articulated.

Fuel filler and vent pipe fitted into the recess.

Covers painted and fitted in place.

Ready to fuel up!!

I am doing an arun build currently, well to be honest the build has stalled,i have thus far realised that super glue and skin arent a good mix, that filler primer does not hide my naff filler jobs/sanding.
Your attention to detail is impressive and you must have a lot of patience, which i have discovered i do not.

Started to add some corporate identity to the wheelhouse today.

Much of today has been taken up with making and fitting the spray screens around the upper steering position.

The tow rope reel, which was made earlier in the build, has now been fitted in position at the rear of the wheelhouse. The top will be glued and allowed to set overnight as the liferaft sits on the top of this reel housing. The handle has been made to allow the rope to be stowed away.

The liferaft  contaibner has been made by adding styrene sheet to a wooden core, fitted to its frame and fixed in  place on top of the rope reel housing.

The compass  (working) has been fitted inmto its housing and added to the upper steering position.

The handrails on the upper position haver been made and fitted.

The rescue frames on the sides of the wheelhouse have been rigged.

The axe has been fitted in its holder and the warning/locking signs added to the door.

The wiper arms and blades have been fitted into the wiper boxes.

The nameplates have been made and fitted and a start made on the lower handrails.

Decided that it was about time the crew were introduced to their new wheelhouse. The figures were obtained from Adrians Marine Figures range. One figure was a "civilian" who was just ripe for a quick makeover to beome an RNLI Divisional Inspector.

First job was to add an RNLI style life jacket from Milliput and allow it to set.

This was followed by a repaint, the addition of the straps and we now have an RNLI Inspector. :-))

The Helmsman has taken over the steering control on the upper console, he just needed a little filing to fit the wheel position.

He is however under the watchful gaze of the Inspector !!  {-) {-) {-)

More bits added.   :-))

The rest of the lower handrails have been made and fitted to each side. The support brackets for the lifeline that runs the length of the superstructure have also been made and fitted, these are the small bracket on the side of the rope lockers at the front, near the top, and under the rear pivot for the MOB crane. The life line will be added using black shirring elastic the maintain its tension.

The rest of the VHF aerials, and their downleads into the wheelhouse, on the upper deck have been made, fixed in place on the rails, and painted. There are two,  one long one forward and a short one aft, on the starboard side rails and one short one, forward, on the port side rails. The support frame for the life ring that sits on the port side rails has also been made and fitted.

The life ring itself has also been made (good old curtain pole rings again!) and now sits, not glued, in place on the holder.

Last of the bits have been made and added.

On the roof the horn and searchlight (non-working as I did not realise it was fitted until too late to add the wiring)  are in place.

The parts for the screen washer system pinned in place ready to solder.

After soldering, cleaning up and painting the unit is fitted onto the front of the wheelhouse.

The two switch panels for the functions have been made and are ready to fit into the lockers at the front of the wheelhouse.

All the "birds nest tangle" of wires has been tamed, sorted and soldered onto the switch panels and the battery pack added into the central rope bin. Joy of Joys !! Everything works as it should.  :-))

All the switches have now been labeled to avoid confusion as to what operates what.

Last thing to make were the flags, including the Welsh Dragon that was flown by the Kenneth Thelwall when stationed at Holyhead. These were printed onto T shirt transfer paper in reverse.

After ironing onto fine cotton material (well washed gents hankies are great for this), trimming to size and the halyards fitting they are readt to hoist.

After hoisting the flags they are made to hang in a more natural manner by use of a hot air gun.

Lastly views of the completed wheelhouse, ready to go into service with the other two crew figures on board.

That's all folks !!    Anything else is just fiddling about just for the sake of it.

Wish I had a fraction of your skill. I've not even got a clue what to do with these two Thames hulls yet.
