Planet T5 Radio
« on: November 11, 2014, 05:32:16 pm »

I have just got a little more up to date and bought this radio but the shop
never told me that I need a battery pack to power the receiver  - is that right?
Anything else I need to get running? Cables for charging?
Thanks .....

If your ESC has a BEC you should not need a separate battery pack. Indeed if you have a BEC do not use a separate pack unless you remove the red wire on the receiver lead.

I'm so glad you pointed that out Dougal, I should have known that
as all my boats run on Speed controllers with BEC.
The old Futaba 40mhz was so easy, hope I get up to speed with this one quickly.
Yes, I do belong to a boat club, in fact I'll be down there tomorrow with the kit
sorting this out - but thanks for both your replies.
This site always comes up with the answers!

If you are talking about the TX then it will take rechargeable batteries it just means you don't use the plug in charger!

It was the receiver that I was unsure about with all the exposed pins.
The end one being marked B.

TIP! To solve the problem of the easily broken T5 aerial joint, I reinforce it with self-amalgamating rubber tape which welds itself to the aerial. Only a few turns are required and it does not affect the signal. Although the book says it operates at 90 degrees, I use mine straight and it works perfectly provided you point it directly at your vessel. Another Bob. O0

The tape is good for the job but make sure the antenna wire has not
snapped at the break.
Pointing the end of the antenna at the model is not going to give you a strong
signal as there is next to no signal out of the end of an antenna.

I have made a hard foam support bracket for mlne when in the storage position at 90degs  and fits in my bag safely.Had no probs since.Agree about the aerial radiation pattern as well, best stick to the recommended.LB.

I use a 150 mm length of 20 mm plastic water pipe to protect my T5 aerial when in storage and transit.
Fits over the aerial snuggly.

It gives me a more than adequate signal at 70-80 yards - and has never produced any problems for years - whatever the book says!  O0
Bob K's water pipe is also a good tip.

If you are talking about the TX then it will take rechargeable batteries it just means you don't use the plug in charger!
As an adjunct to this ("Look it up, missus...........!") I noticed that the socket connection to a plug-in charger for the T5 Tx is the opposite polarity to most others - that's if the moulded legend on the case is anything to go by. The centre of the socket is negative while those on my Futaba, Hitec, Sanwa etc chargers are all centre-positive. There should be a diode in there to prevent damage from reverse-polarity connection but if you're not aware of this you might find that after a night's "charging" the batteries are as flat as when you put them on charge. I've always taken the batteries out and used a standard "clip 'em in" charger.
