Propshaft Oilers.
« on: November 24, 2014, 08:01:22 pm »

Hi All,

Somewhere I remember a retro-fit shaft oiler that clamped round the shaft tube. Can anyone help with who supplied it?

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Tony, the clamp on oilers I have used to fit 6&8mm tubes were a Graupner part
I have asked the traders who I used to get them from at the recent shows and they
Say they are unavailable. So I solder oiler pipes on the tubes before I fit them to the hull.

Hi have you tried soldering a short tube onto the prop tube and then drill through afterwards?  Then extend the tube with some plastic tubing.

Hi Tony,
Try Chyldshallmodelshipyard.com or club500slipway.com.
Both do a slip over the stern tube oiler.

Cornwall Model Boats list these - not sure if they are in stock however. I have a couple of them - not sure of the diameter. If you're interested you can have one of them for the cost of postage. PM me if interested and I'll check them out.

Thanks all!

I'd normally use brass tube, but in this case I'm rebuilding for some one and the coupling is virtually welded onto the shaft, so I can't get the shaft out of the hull >>:-(

I can just about get a Dremel alongside and grind a hole in the prop tube, but I won't be able to solder anything on unless I'm dead lucky.

So.... 6mm would be perfect thanks Wicker IF it can be clamped from both sides and I'll check with Chylde Hall as well.

Thanks again all.

Tony

PS Sorry Barrie, I've not found what you mean as yet.

Tony

This is what I have. As you can see it needs access top and bottom of the shaft. Diameter is approx 6mm.

I do forsee an issue here..... If you can't remove the shaft great care will be needed to prevent swarf entering the tube and damaging the shaft.
Removal of the coupling would be a good idea to ensure long life of the shaft

Hi Roy,
If you go to Chyldshall web site. Click on products on left hand menu, then click on fittings. Scroll down and theres a pic of the oiler.

Many thanks all, especially to Wicker, for the answer to a particularly awkward problem!

I knew I could rely on Mayhem :-))

Many thanks again Wicker,

Arrived, inspected and one already fitted.

Just the job to solve the problem :-))

Tony

Just to add, I held a small neodym magnet nest to the grinder when I was cutting the hole in the tube so, hopefully, most of the swarf will have been kept away from the shaft,

Was the tube made of steel or brass?

I've always drilled mine as opposed to grinding.
I normally solder my oiler tubes but if using a clamp
type, I fit the clamp then drill down it with the drill
greased to pick up the swarf.
Magnets don't work too well on brass {:-{

Couple of further bits!

1. It was steel John :-))

2. I couldn't get a drill to the tube Ned, so I had to lay a Dremel, with a substantially reduced cutting disc, alongside and worked a slot in the tube, stopping when the hole got to 2-3mm diameter. The magnet appeared to take up a fair bit of the swarf and the oiler was fixed in place with a touch of Araldite. Since the slot was at right angles to the tube, there appears to be a fair seal.

Cheers

If it's done the job Tony, no problems.
In about fifteen powered models every
Stern tube has been brass.
I know there are steel ones around but
yet to meet one.

Aye, that's what I thought but whatever it was stuck to the magnet. That's the problem with doing a rebuild job for a mate in that you never know where the original materials came from. Still, as you rightly put it, if it works............. ok2

Tony

PS Just as an example of odd materials being used, I spent some time in the carpet trade and when India started producing very heavy, 15ft wide wool "long-pile" carpet they used 4" diameter cast-iron tubes in the centre, rather than the cardboard or plastic ones used elsewhere. Work that one out! :embarrassed:

I referred to this subject many moons ago.
I;ve always found that the cheapest, easiest method is to simply drill a suitably sized hole into the prop tube. Clean it up and then clip a "Terry Clip" over the hole. This clip can then be slid aside for future greasing. No need for all the hassle of soldering and so on. BY.
