RFA Vessel plans
« on: January 15, 2015, 06:05:03 pm »

Hi all, thinking on a future project I wondered if anyone has knowledge of plans for any of the RFA Forts? Preferably the later of the forts. Or indeed any RFA Vessels with the exception of the rover class, which I am aware of the plans.

I am sure I will be waiting a while for a green light on this one, but any advice would be fantastic  :-))

Good luck with your search for plans. I fancied building an early (post war just) Eddy or Wave class but found plans very scarce. You might get help from contrubutors to this site.

I knew it would be extremely difficult to get anything. If it has to be a rover class then so be it, probably wise as the model will be rather large!

the rovers are pretty basic hence plans etc being available, the forts are still active, albeit 2/3 parked up in Liverpool, so unlikely to find any significant details available!

Thanks for the replies folks.
I am probably going to settle for a rover as I know plans are readily available. But I will be trying some of the sources mentioned (thanks Frank) before hand as I'd really like to build a fort.

Hi AdamD98
I have found the builder yard would have plans for the ships as I have the Australian ship Aurora Australis plans from the builders yard they gave me the GA and the line drawings. I have a hunt class model and a River mine sweeper to build maybe one day do an island class patrol boat. But I would give the builders Plan Department a try and just say you are going to try building the name of Ship  and size as they can print of a set of plans/ Drawing for it for you or they will tell you who to Ask. All the best with it.

hi there you could try getting in touch with Bryan Young on this forum as I do know he served on these ships and also he has built an RFA boat, but I am not sure which one it is.   Obviously he may not see this message or see your pm but its worth a try.  You can contact Bryan via Captain Podge/Ray and Ray can contact Bryan at Tynemouth Club.   Hope this may be of some help.

Thanks for the replies folks. I thought this thread had died a death.

I'd like to build something along the lines of RFA Orangeleaf rather than my original idea, but it's been put on the back burner for now until something comes up.

Thanks Ray, that's much appreciated.

I'm eventually looking to build the recent, but sadly now sent for scrap, Orangeleaf. I believe she recently arrived in Turkey for the inevitable last goodbye!

Bryan has some fantastic models, thanks for the link to this one!

H.M,A.S Westralia O195, was a modified Leaf classreplenishment oilerwhich served with the Royal Australian Navy(RAN) from 1989 to 2006. Formerly RFA Appleleaf (A79), she served in with the British Royal Fleet Auxiliary(RFA) from 1975 to 1989. The ship was initially leased to the RAN, then purchased outright in 1994. In 1998, a fire onboard resulted in the deaths of four sailors. Westraliawas decommissioned in 2006, and the ship was sold into civilian service for use as a Floating Production Storage and Offloadingvessel, under the name Shiraz. However, the ship was laid up in Indonesia until late 2009, when she was sold to a Turkish ship breakingcompany. Arriving in January 2010, the vessel was scrapped. there is 1/72 scale model in WA , Australia, See information below

A shame about RFA Orangeleaf. She had only undergone a refit @ Lairds in 2014 and then was moored up at the West Float before scrapping. A shame not to mention a waste of money!

I know of 1 72 scale model of H.M.A.S. Westralia, It was made by a PO in the Navy that was on the Westralia.

Has anyone tried contacting the RFA HQ about ship plans, expect time Museum the same as warships, they exist if you have a big enough wallet.

Sorry about that, my keyboard is playing up again, what I was saying is old vessels disposed off the plans are most likely now in the Maritime museum.
