A few photos showing the current state of progress. I have now roughly trimmed the moulding down to deck level. Keeping the weight under control during the build is going to be key to the success/failure of how it performs. The scaled down weight of the full sized boat is only 3.1Kg. I weighed the empty hull moulding after trimming, and it came in at 720g. So there is not going to be much to play with :o

In which scale are you building.
I throught of building it in 1/24 once, which would be 1,3kg given the ~20t displacement in the spec sheet.
This was the reason not to start to build it. %)

Hi Tobias,

Scale is 1/18th. The drawings i have show a Hoisting Weight of 40,000 LBS, which equates to 18,143 KG.

Deck moulding has been completed. I designed this with a large flange around the edge to give a nice large gluing area to achieve a good strong bond to the hull. Fitted some Balsa blocks in the hull just to locate the deck at the correct height.

Next job was to cut out the Survivor Recovery Wells and Exhaust holes. After i have added some reinforcement under the deck, i will cut out the main access hole in the deck, below the Wheelhouse.

I have fitted some 4mm Ply Reinforcement around the big opening in the deck, to make the structure nice and rigid, and give it sufficient strength. Wherever there are going to be holes in the deck for the Stanchions, Towing Post and the Forward Samson Post, i have reinforced these areas as well. All the ply was then given a coating of Resin. The Prop Shafts have arrived, and the rudders fabricated out of Brass and styrene.
I weighed the Hull again, and after cutting out the Recovery Wells, this now weighs in at 706g. The finished Deck Moulding weighs in at 434g, giving a total of 1140g, which means things are looking good on the weight front. The maximum all-up weight has to be 3.1kg or under, and i am hoping if there is any spare, then i will be able to fit a sound unit and speaker. Since i now have the Motors, Mounts, ESCs and LIPOs, i will weigh all of this lot over the next few days.

You didn't pigment the hull when you laid it up?  Was that a conscious decision or were you short of pigment?

I am going to apply a painted finish, so there is no need to use any pigment.

The Running Gear is now Epoxied into position. I have also made a pair of motor mounts and a battery tray for the 2x LIPOs. There is a bit of a space restriction where the Motors will be. Since they fit into a standard 380 Mount, i am going to use these, and then rotate them through 90 degrees, so that the Base Plate will bolt onto a vertical face  :o

Charlie,
A really nice boat, likewise your build - it is looking spectacular. Many good bits within your build to help anyone else doing likewise [for their first time] to understand the processes - this is where the Forum comes into its own. Me thinks you have done this before though!!
I shall look forward very much to the progress and enjoy it.

Hi Charlie,
I read here with great interest. Very good job so far. Fine mold. :-))
Supports you the pipes for the rudder?

Hi Kim - thanks for that. It is always encouraging to receive positive feedback.

Hi Michael - you are correct, the Rudder Tubes do need more support, in fact the epoxy has not bonded very well to the GRP, so i am going to remove them and try using Cyano instead. And i will reinforce with some putty.

I gave the Motor Mounts and Battery Tray a coat of Resin 2 days ago, but the cold weather has meant that this has not cured yet. Hopefully it will be cured by the weekend so i can crack on. I really want to get the internal fit-out completed so i can bond the Deck to the Hull, and then start on the upper works.

Deck is now bonded to the Hull and all faired in nicely. Spray Rails have been made, so next job will be to glue these to the Hull, then off to the Paint Shop for the first coat of primer.

Dont You use any gelcoat? I can see the hull is nicly laminated. Lightweight but strong.

Hi Kees, there is a thin layer of clear Gelcoat. It's just difficult to see since there is no Pigment. I kept the Moulding as thin as possible due to the weight restrictions, but now that the hull and deck are bonded together, it has created a very strong structure.

The Wheelhouse is slowly taking shape, all fabricated out of 1.5mm Styrene.
