US Coast Guard 47' Motor Lifeboat
« on: January 25, 2015, 04:36:53 pm »

I've had this on my build list for ages, and seeing as the weather has warmed up enough to spend some time in the Workshop, i finally got started. Not bad for a weekends work!

I'm building this in 1:18 scale. Hull and Deck will be GRP, the wheelhouse will be styrene. And twin brushless motors for plenty of oomph  :-)

Hi Charlie.

It's no easy task making a grp hull. I made one many years ago for a 1/12 Rnxs vessel " Exploit"  I learnt a lot.

Watching with interest  :-))

After lots of filling and sanding down, i was finally happy with the finish, so i gave it a coat of Sanding Sealer. After that was rubbed down, i sprayed on a coat of Primer to show up any blemishes. I have also glued on a lip around the top edge of the plug to give the GRP an edge to butt up against, so that my moulding has a nice clean edge :)

Charlie........it looks superb lovely finish on the plug....
could I give you a word of advice though.........make that flange around the top side of the plug around 25mm wide, or you might find that you get just a hairy none resin impregnated finish and air bubbles in the sharp 90 degree corner that you have fabricated,

Hi Neil, i think you are right. Will have a look at re-doing the flange. I have a question for you; what thickness Glass Cloth would you recommend? I think in the past, the Cloth i have used has been too thick, which has caused problems when trying to lay up around sharp corners.

Charlie..............I have always used 1.5 ounce ( what ever that equates to in grams) chopped strand.............
it is a little stiff, but it is easily splitable by peeling it to a thinner layer, like you would a slate for roofing..........it is around the same cost as 1.0 ounce but you get almost twice as much coverage, and the resin impregnates easier, and it also takes shape easier around the sharp angles

Hi Mark,

I have been busy with the Fibre Glass. Both halves have been moulded, and at the weekend i will remove them from the Plug.

The Cabin is probably a bit too complex to produce as a moulding, so i will make that out of sheet material.

A few photos showing the current state of progress. I have now roughly trimmed the moulding down to deck level. Keeping the weight under control during the build is going to be key to the success/failure of how it performs. The scaled down weight of the full sized boat is only 3.1Kg. I weighed the empty hull moulding after trimming, and it came in at 720g. So there is not going to be much to play with :o
