When i was making the towline reels, i wanted to find out the correct diameter of line to use. When i was Googling, I found this document. "Design and Construction of the U.S. Coast Guard's 47-ft Self-Righting, Heavy Weather Rescue Craft" which contains a wealth of technical info. Hope this link works, it should take you to a PDF document.

Anyhow, my query was answered as follows:

Aft Deck Arrangement: The aft deck includes a P-I pump, tow bitt, and two line reels; one holding 600 feet of 3-1/4 inch circumference double braided nylon line and the other, 300 feet of 2 inch line. Both towline reels are designed with a hand crank to retrieve the towline.

So yesterday i fitted all the RC gear, and decided to carry out a weight check. Without the LIPOs, the all up weight was 3 kg. My 2x 3S 5000mah LIPOs weighed in at 700g, giving a total of 3.7 Kg. Now my original target weight was 3.1 kg, based on a full-size weight of 18,000 kg, so i was a bit concerned that i was over weight, and would have to use some much smaller batteries, which would adversely impact performance and endurance. So this morning i decided to carry out a tank test, and check the waterline. To my surprise, even with the batteries fitted, she was riding high in the water at the stern. A 200g battery placed on the aft deck brought her down to her marks nicely. So i am extremely chuffed! I believe this can be explained as the weight i was working off from the drawings, must be excluding fuel and stores. The fully fueled up and loaded boat must weigh a fair bit more.

Charlie,
Magnificent!! That will be a real one-off at Shows and on the lakes and ponds. So glad it has all worked out correct.
Keep up the good work and try and join me at the Dungeness Open Day next year under my gazebo?
Regards,
Kim

Charlie....I came in a little late at post #34.....as others have said 'brilliant' ....no pun with the aluminium aura  :-))...so life like....

Even with the Manufacturers 30 odd page build specification.....something as simple as taking into consideration additional weights of small gallonage fluid containers or understanding the average weight of the nominal number of crew on board  O0

So all is good with the displacement & your chosen battery setup............Derek

I'm currently waiting for delivery of Rubber Fender and Decals, so no build progress to report. However i have been doing a bit of research to find out what happened to the original MLB prototype boat 47200, and the 5 pre-production protoypes, 47201 - 47205, which were sold at some point. I have found photos of 4 of the prototypes. The only one i know the identity of is 47201 which is in use as a private vessel in Malta. One is used as a pilot boat in the Florida Everglades, one is used by the San Francisco Police Department, and one has been converted into a Rough Weather Boarding boat.

Decals and Rubber Fendering now fitted. Nav Lights and Blue light all wired up. Just waiting for some Heat Shrink then i can fit the Mast-Head Light.
I have numbered her 47288 after one of the MLBs stationed at Quillayute River in Washington State, on the Pacific North West Coast. Click on the link below for some cool Drone Footage of the full size 47288 battling the surf.

Thanks to some great advice in the Brushless Forum, I was able to get my ESCs all set up a couple of weeks back. Ever since then I have been waiting for a Sunday to try her out, since she is now 95% finished, just a few more small parts to finish. This had to wait a while, as the lake was frozen over for several weeks, and then last Sunday I was running a Half Marathon (my other hobby!). The weather forecast isn't looking too good for this coming weekend, and the low temperatures could well freeze the lake again, so I decided to take a days leave today and take her for a run.
So how did she perform? Well, she is fast, very fast  :-)) You have to be careful when turning at high speed as she has a tendency to heel right over. My expectations were certainly exceeded, and it makes all that work on her worthwhile, to see her running on the lake. Unfortunately my hands were too cold to continue after about 20 mins, so I had to call it a day. I think I need a bit more practise when the weather warms up, before I can be passed out as a qualified Coxswain!
I did take a few photos, and I have posted some clips on my Youtube Channel.

Beautiful. Looks just like the one out of  Southwest Harbor, Maine. Every time I see her coming up behind me, I expect to be pulled over. Nice job.
