Fuse protection between the brushless motor and ESC
« on: January 28, 2015, 12:41:47 pm »

Hi All,

During my research into wiring the motor/esc and battery I viewed some really good diagrams provided by Action Electronics. I noticed that most of the diagrams showed fuse protection between the motor and esc using Actions P95 units, unfortunately the installations were all of two wired brushed motors and it doesn't appear that the P95 is suitable for three wired brushless motors.

Is it necessary to fuse protect the wiring between the motor and esc, primarily to save the esc going up in smoke, and if so is the only option to fit a harness type fuse holder to each of the three wires.

Thanks Shaun

As far as I know its not possible, and I have never seen a setup with a fuse between the ESC and the motor

Since it is the current from the battery drawn by the motor via the ESC that blows them , put your fuse between the battery and ESC.  If the current gets too large, it blows

A fuse between the motor and the esc , would protect the motor NOT the esc.

I've never fused the connection to the motor. Always battery side only.

P95 was introduced at the suggestion of a Forum member (he knows who he is) who told us that quite a number of folk would prefer to fuse the connection between motor and ESC. Frankly I'd never done this either but judging by the thousands of P95s which have been sold there must be a lot who do.
Ref brushless motors I'm with the crowd - just fuse between the ESC and the battery.

Brushless are basically small 3-phase motors. Breaking one wire to these is called 'single-phasing' and is not a good thing. (On industrial controls unbalance current is detected and the motor stopped.)

So as said above, just have a good quality, securely terminated set of wires between the ESC and motor and let the ESC itself or the fuse feeding the ESC handle the protection.

Thank you to everyone who has replied. I feel a lot happier now about just fusing between the battery and ESC.

Cheers Shaun
