Bonding decking to Plastic kit
« on: March 13, 2015, 01:53:14 pm »

Hi guys
I have a Tamiya Tirpitz that I'm slowly building into an RC model
I bought a set of real wood decking upgrades and was wondering what glue people would recommend to bond said decks to the existing plastic decks?

I imagine you will get several suggestions for glue but also consider using double sided fixing tape. There are waterproof varieties which are hardly thicker than a coat of paint and can give a very neat result. One of our members, Bryan Young, uses it extensively for his large models and it works very well.

Hi essex, I give the plastic deck/base etc a good roughing up with sand paper, I have even
Been known to drill holes prior to fixing the planking sheets.
I use the 30-60 minute 2 part epoxy resin, (works for me).

Thanks for the speedy replies! I had not thought about double sided tape!

I will bear it in mind, I did think Epoxy was the way to go but wanted to be sure first

Any other suggestions?

Thinking outside the box why not plastic cement.

There are plastic cements which literally melt the plastic and as such all you need is to position the deck in place until it sets.

Also you can use what the AFV guys do, make up a creamy paste by adding pieces of polystyrene to liquid cement and paint it on.

We have a member "Starlok adhesives", I think, who would no doubt have some expert advice, being a manufacturer of Glues

I've just read this and realised that I could saved you the effort of enquiring about it- never mind. Just remember to seal the deck in because in some circumstances the thin veneer has been known to lift up a couple of years after the model is completed.

I have self adhesive "wooden" decking on my Trumpeter Bismarck. It works ok'ish but the edges need some additional help to keep them fixed own securely. I used a standard contact adhesive which has worked well.

Alan

PS also needs sealing with clear varnish or it will "bubble" on contact with water.
