National Warship Weekend 2015 - 11th/12th July
« on: March 23, 2015, 11:48:16 am »

Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July 2015

Glasgow Richmond Model Boat Club is delighted to once again be hosting the NWW on behalf of the Scottish Model Warship Association on the above dates.

Many of you may have been before so you know the score but for any new visitors this event is the largest warship show in the UK and has attracted visitors from Europe and further afield over the years.

Visiting clubs can set up static displays by the pond side and everyone is encouraged to sail as much as they want.

GRMBC will be setting up their harbour for coming alongside practice, the minefield will be deployed (or maybe not, calling all minesweepers just in case) and on the Sunday the warship manoeuvring competition will be held. Form a team of three and see how good you are at staying together.

In the past we have attracted several traders who specialise in warship parts and they may well be there this year also. We will be confirming this as we get closer to the weekend.

GRMBC will be offering drinks and snacks over both days to keep you going.

Both SMWA and GRMBC look forward to seeing you there.

Best wishes
Sandy

You can count me in again. Last year was brilliant, the weather was good, the people were great and the models were outstanding. See you all there!  :-))

Hi all
With much regret I have to inform you that the above event at GRMBC has had to be cancelled.

The pond was routinely tested by the Glasgow City Council and found to contain dangerous  levels of Blue/Green algae (Cyanobacteria).  Despite desperate attempts to rectify the situation, unfortunately we have had to cancel all events for the foreseeable future on the advice of the council.

Sorry for the late notice, but this has been a bolt out of the blue to us all at the SMWA and GRMBC and to say we are devastated is an understatement.  Who knows we may be able to hold some sort of show later on in the year if the council give the all clear.

What a shame, possibly the best model boating weekend in the country,I feel sorry for the Glasgow boys who put so much work into it to make it a success.
As it's a problem a lot of clubs can relate to nowadays,I hope it can be sorted out in the future.
Shame also for the people who have made travel arrangements, hope it dos'nt cause too much of a problem for them.

I was at Glasgow Richmond a few weeks ago - a Saturday. No-one about. The pond was bright green with algae.

Forgive my ignorance, but I thought the cause was usually argicultural run-off: too much feed promoting algae growth. This is what now regularly happens at the tarn in Cumbria where I learned to sail "a few" years ago (when there never used to be a problem). Why's the situation so bad in this more urban setting?

I'm afraid algae is becoming more and more common.
Unfortunately it is more common in static ponds, where there is little water flow the weather then helps It flourish, as you say a few weeks ago bright green, Thursday night it was clear but the council results still show a high algae content hence we have had to cancel  {:-{

Frank,
So glad you have more knowledge of the issues we have had than we and the council have.
After months of planning and working alongside the council to try and ensure the show goes ahead
You would think we would of been checking all options, unlike some we have not burned our bridges at any club.

Hi Andy.
One of the problems we have at Richmond is the high population of Swans and the over enthusiastic feeding of them by the public, the build up of uneaten food in the pond combined with lack of water flow, the detritus already in the pond the nice sunny weather has contributed to the present problem. The council are now looking into the possibility of park rangers patrolling the park to prevent the feeding of the swans.
Glasgow Richmond MBC, Land and Environmental services and SEPA are in constant contact Re. the water quality in the pond and hope to have it under control soon :-))

Hi regards over feeding causing pond etc causing poor conditions in the pond.  Experience in St. Albans suggests that having been told much the same and that the excess bird feeding had caused the mud to be aneroibic was a lot of guessing and not much checking.

The pond (we like to call them lakes down here in the deep south!) was designated as a model boating 'lake' whose main purpose was to trap mud before the water got to the more ornamental lake.  There is water flow but not much, mainly rain.

To maintain the staus quo the mud has to be removed, eventually after much nagging it was.  It proved to be good old fashioned mud with no problems and was used else where in the Park.

I think all of our assets need some management otherwise we lose them.
I do hope you are able to go back to sailing on your pond.  I assume the pond belongs to somebody, perhaps offering to help in some way might be a start?
best regards Roy
