Voice tube...correct name?
« on: April 09, 2015, 08:47:47 am »

Does anybody know the correct name for the voice tube support on an X craft...is it called an 'Hazlett Rail' or a Hezlett Rail?

Am I guessing, but I thought the Hezlet Rail was not a voice tube but used to keep sailors on board.
Maybe worth a discussion, from those who know a bit more..

As far as I know, the Hezlett rail was used by the Captain to hang onto when the craft was running on the surface, but it also had a voice tube attached to it to allow for steering and other commands to be passed down to the crew below.

Thanks for that, Jay...I did some digging around as well, so Hezlett rail it is.

George volunteered to show how the Hezlett Rail is used (third attempt at making the damn thing) the voice tube is a small conical affair which fits on the end of the pipe, shown in the pics as a white pipe. I still have to fit that, that'll come after painting is done.

Rich reason Hezletts name  rang a bell to me was it cropped up in the masterpiece ''One of our Submarines ' by  Edward Young first  reserve officer to command a warship/Sub    STORM.  He mentions Hezlett and that he was one of the Subs that towed the midgets up for the attack on Tirpitz. Well worth a read from yachtsman to commander
