It's always been a thorn of contention with me that everyone seems to celebrate their national day, but England through years of 'political correctness' has denied its citizens the same courtesy.

Totally concur with the above. Tonight I will raise a pint yo honour the day . Too many years if being told we cannot fly the cross of St George,  that I am British and not English.  Last time I looked Britain is not a country and neither is the United Kingdom. I'm English and proud.

First and foremost I am a Yorkshireman or more to the point as I fly the county flag, an East Riding of Yorkshireman ( I still believe in east west and north ridings, not east north west and south yorkshire which are local government divides) Only after that do I consider myself an Englishman.

There is no such title as united kingdom-man or great britainman, so why shouldn't we celebrate the fact we have a national day just like the other 3 countries that make up the kingdom do?

Suprisingly more people in England celebrate St Patrick's day than do St George's Day

St George was a Greek who joined the Roman army and was executed by the Emperor Diocletian for refusing to denounce his faith. I doubt he ever came within a thousand miles of England; probably had never even heard of it.
Why don't we celebrate a proper English saint, like St Alban? Ref celebrating St Patrick's Day, any excuse for a booze-up (not my first choice of phrase but this is a family forum....)

Anyroad up, who's the patron saint of Spain then, Brian?  %)

People do love their tribal hierarchies to give them a sense of identity and belonging.

i.e.
Country: Great Britain
Nation: England, Wales, Scotland Ireland (and, some would maintain, Yorkshire)
Region: Yorkshire (where it should be), Scouse, Geordie, Londoner, Caulkheads (look it up), Brummie, Cockney etc.
Football Club (often at the opposite end of the country to where the 'supporter' lives.)
Class: Working, Middle, Upper, Twits
Jobs: Bankers...., no we won't go there I think.
Pastimes: MODEL BOATERS, pistonheads, yotties gardeners and just about anything you can think of.
Pastime Niches: Scale, Fast Electrics, Model Yachting, damn great things with IC engines stuffed in them etc.

All these define our identity and who we are. (You will see I have omitted Politics & Religion in accordance with Forum rules)

St James is recognised as the patron saint of Spain matey. However you will find that each autonomo (same as our shires) has their own saint. All the way down to cities, towns and even villages having their own recognised saint. Our village it is the Virgen del Carmen (spelling is correct) whose day is celebrated every 16th July- what a street party that is! the whole village turns out to eat drink party set off huge firework displays for 3 to 4 days, depends which weekend is the nearer to the day to stretch it into a long weekend :D This year for instance 16th is a thursday, so everyone will take the friday off. The party starts at midnight on the 15th with some fireworks, then it is music -traditional for a couple of hours then modern for a couple of hours etc etc. This goes on 24 hours a day until the end of the weekend.

The Spanish know how to party {-) {-) {-)

"Patrol" saint? Did you mean petrol? That makes blue smoke.
Remember! I just put the smoke in - it's the eejits who let it out (and it's grey, not blue).  :P

St George? An imposter! St Edmund was England's original patron saint until ousted.

Is it not enough to celebrate it as Shakespeare's birthday?
