Q. re batteries for a large J-boat model
« on: April 23, 2015, 08:01:22 pm »

I would appreciate recommendations concerning batteries for a large J-boat model, an 8 foot long 'Ranger'.  Two large servos (rudder and sails) and Rob's big SmartWinch.  To run on salt water for typical durations of up to 30 minutes, or occasionally longer if practical.  I have a pair of 4000 mAh LiPo's, but the maker strongly discourages saltwater use, saying fresh water OK, seawater no.  I am far from committed to the latest & greatest in battery technology.  I'll use anything that is reliable, even lead acids.  Weight is not an issue, since the required ballast in this model will be around 92 pounds.  I used to use NiCads in small R/C boats, without problems, and in fact still have my charger for them.  One recommendation I have gotten for the J is to use Lithium Ion batteries, the main rationale given being that they can tolerate being run until nearly flat, unlike LiPo's.  Comments gratefully appreciated.

Hello Marty,

I use 6 amp "D" cells in both of my large yachts.
Never had any trouble with them.
The same packs fit either boat, recharged from the Car.
Bring the boat in for a rest - - top up the batteries !!!.

John.  :-))

Pretty much answered your own question, if weight isn't an issue having 'working ballast' in the form of lead acid cells would make sense.
Couple of 6v 10A/h gel cells wired in parallel would keep you running all day if not two!

On a somewhat smaller boat (a Victoria) I get to sail all day on a pack of AA 2500 cells.  Assuming that your J boat is a yacht, a 30 minute sail should be easily possible on almost any battery.

Hi,

Good choice of sailwinch. Mine was one of the first models and it goes well in the racing Marblehead.

I run the winch and a quarter scale rudder servo on a rechargeable 7.2V car battery.

I usually sail or race for an hour and a half.

If the yacht is set up right you should only need the rudder to turn.

I use a throw of 7 degrees either side of centre or in a tacking duel I have a switch which opens the rudder to 11 degrees either side of centre.

Regards
