First time out
« on: May 12, 2015, 11:21:32 am »

When I had a bash (careful choice of word) at scale steering the other day the chap 'judging' me (Mr Turbo for those in know) explained that you had to steer the boat between and around the buoys - I thought they were targets to be hit! %%   On my scoring I did very well but need to practice more for Mr Turbo's scoring system.

When I did it for the first time it was easier to count the one I missed. Apparently it was a very round number  {:-{

No doubt you get a round number these days too - only at the other end of the scale and starting with a one followed by a couple of noughts.  Room for improvement on my part but one can aspire to great things.

We used to enter steering regattas with a sub...set off, get to the first marker bouy and submerge. Give it a couple of minutes, then run underwater to the finishing line, surface and claim a clear round.   %)

Needless to say we usually ended up getting disqualified...  ;D

was once running a regatta steering course at Fleetwood with a difference....the "captain" had to nominate what time he would take to get round the course........as long as he went through the gates there was no penalty for the hits, and the nearest time to stated was the winner of the trophy.......it was all going to plan when a guy came along with a Lesro Atlantic 21 lifeboat.

boats were taking anything from 3 to 15 minutes on the course at that stage of the day

conversation went:  ............

"what time are you nominating mate........."

"21 seconds" came the reply

" {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)" as I fell about laughing

He plonked his boat into the water.......

19 seconds later he passed the finish line........clear round, no hits and walked away with the trophy...........

I was left to pick my jaw up before I trod on it..... O0 {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

moral is............never ever laugh at anyone till you know what they are capable of, lol {:-{ {:-{ {:-{ {:-{

Sound advice, Neil.

Thanks to everyone for recounting their first time out and other scale steering stories.
