My First Build - Krick Borkum
« on: July 06, 2015, 10:26:18 pm »

Greetings from Denver, Colorado.

I just wanted to share my journey.

About 4 years ago I decided to pursue "Steam",  and I chose Stationary and Marine Engines to start.
I re-configured my workshop from wood-to-metal, and acquired a Lathe and a Mill.  I bought Sherline,
in the DRO configuration as I felt that I needed to feel the cutting of swarf, and get a sense of how metal
acted.  I felt that CNC would distance me from that knowledge and experience.

I read every book on Model Engineering I could find (most from the UK), and made a couple of small
engines to get a feel for the process.  Then last year I decided to build a boat, and then have a platform to
put various engines in.  I chose the Krick Borkum  as a good open hull, and a deck I could mount in.

Here are some pics of my shop.

Thanks for reading.

Re: My First Build - Krick Borkum - The Boat - Engines
« Reply #1 on: July 07, 2015, 02:17:41 am »

After building a number of small engines, I decided to build a boat to run them on.

Decided on the Krick Borkum,  and after reading up on Boilers, I decided that the first one
would be professionally made, and I chose tone from Miniature Steam from Australia.

Then, before I could pick the engine I was going to build, I found a good deal on Ebay from
Microcosim -  A nice little 2 cylinder.

And of course, I insulated and wrapped the pipes.

Here are some pics.

Welcome Jim........that is a pretty functional looking workshop  :-))......

Not being familiar with the Borkum build, have you checked the all up weight of the components.....[gas tank, gas regulator, boiler, engine, de oiler etc?] plus all other ancillaries.....  and compared to the permissible or required weight for displacement?

Your actual build is progressing well......the well spaced plank colouration also looks good  O0

Does the kit build instructions talk about protecting the ABS hull from overheat?

From your video, the engine appears to run smoothly at less than 1 Bar ...which is good

Derek,
Thanks for the comments.

The kit was designed to have an engine and boiler about the size I have chosen, and the
instructions include the placement of ballast - so I am assuming that I will be adding some too.

My next set of pics will show the use of some spacer blocks off the lower deck.
The lower deck is about 1 1/2 inches off the ABS hull, so heat is dissipated and the hull protected.

My planned Maiden Voyage is July 18.   Still got a bit to go.

Added lights to the build.
Embedded LED's in the lanterns.
Found some Receiver Controlled Switches.

I am using a little 5-Channel system.
Channel 5 is for Gear. A 3-Position Switch.
1-off
2-running
3-running and lower deck

Started to put in the servos.

Built some brackets for the Throttle and Reverse Gear.

I also needed to hide a small servo for the whistle.
Hid them in a pile of barrels.

Re: My First Build - Whistles
« Reply #13 on: July 14, 2015, 04:39:06 am »

John,

I run my engine at between 15 and 20 PSI,
so the whistle has not had a lot of use yet.
Especially since I have not had her in the water yet.

Have you tried putting a valve in front of  the whistle
to see what % of flow works, then you could put a
flow restriction in place.

On another engine, I have epoxied a piece of tubing inside a std pipe
nipple to restrict the flow.

Just a thought.

Bonjour James (and John),

I also have this whistle on one of my boats and it works well under 2 bars (+/- 30 psi) :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIbGjiD36xU

To manage higher pressures, I have used another solution, a RC steam valve :

And for fun, two French Borkum :

Gilles : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UPcOovj-0Q   (2 cc Anton Quartz steam plant)

Patrick : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UPcOovj-0Q (V4 single effect oscillating 4cc personal build + telemetry !)

Here are some clips from her first time afloat.
Where she was close enough to be heard.
For those of you that want to hear the engine.
