John, I hadn't planned to. The commission from Model Boats is essentially to cover the Nats only. My impression was that the Saturday Tug Towing is a very much a fun event to give a full weekend. Space is tight in the magazine and only a limited number of events can be covered to ensure that there is a reasonable "mix" in each issue.

Regards,

Colin

Steve,

I have two boats available, one is a "standoff scale" coaster "Reculver" and is on BROWN. The other is a Caldercraft "Cumbrae" kit on BLUE. I don't actually need to run either as I will be coming anyway but if there is a spare slot available it would be nice to have a run. But don't give me priority over someone more deserving.

OK, I'll see what I can do. Need to agree overnight accommodation with Paul Freshney and placate other half. 50/50 at the moment on both!

Steve, thanks, I will do as you suggest.

John,

I've spoken to Paul Freshney. Space is tight so he just wants me to cover the Sunday (maybe just as well as I spent all last weekend at the ME Exhibition). However, if somebody takes some pics and puts a paragraph or two together he might be able to squeeze it in, possibly as part of my coverage.

Model Boats already gives more space to events than Marine Modelling but they are not felt to help with selling the mag to the casual browsers in WH Smith which seems fair enough.

Have an enjoyable day anyway.

hi all i may be out of line hear but what is it with mags not covering tugtowing events any more like they used to. we at e port have hosted the finals for mmm none other than three times and to my knowledge hardly a pic and these events were some of the best we have all seen. we used to see reports and pics all the time even at general tug towing events we would see a bit of a wright up and pics what has changed any comments you out there in mag land.

Hi Steve  Because we tug towers don't shut one eye and stand on one leg, WE can do it as a team.

I don't know whether anything has changed but Paul Freshney was apparently promised regular info from the MPBA and nothing has materialised. I think you need to bear in mind that the mags are there to sell copies and maybe it is felt that the subject has been given enough exposure for the time being. Also, did anyone think to send a writeup to Marine Modelling or Model Boats? Paul has had no request from anyone to cover the Scale Nats next weekend. If he hadn't taken on himself to ask me then there would be no coverage of that either!

If people buy a magazine they usually want to learn something from it or get information. In that sense reports of events which may have happened some months ago are of limited interest to Joe Public except perhaps if the pictures of individual models are particularly good. Regattas and other events will continue to receive coverage for the sake of giving a rounded view of the model boating scene but they have to compete with other articles of specific interest. The people who are most interested in regatta reports are those who were there and who comprise only a small fraction of the overall readership.

My article on the Mayhem Weekend in the current issue of Model Boats resulted from me suggesting to Paul that it would be an interesting subject and offering to write it. The unusual angle was that Mayhem is a virtual boat club and community so it wasn't just a bog standard regatta.

A BIG thanks from the Essex boys.

It was our first tug tow and we thoroughly enjoyed it, our commiserations to Steve for putting up with our poor seamonship.

We will get better. O0

A picture from Martin:

Not just a towing competition but a submarine tug as well.

Well, today the sun shone but the wind got up. The downwind area of the lake became very choppy and there were several sinkings and retirements due to flooding! Otherwise a very enjoyable day!
