Pete

I love what you've achieved, both with your Borodino, Thunderchild and now your Independence. These are the closest to what I would like to build one day as a steampunk battleship, can't wait to see them for real at Mayhem weekend- hope you can still make it. :-))

Thankyou for your comments , the inspiration  for uss independence  came from a now out of print book called toy boats 1879 to 1955 , might a number or two out but its still around on amazon cost me 10 pounds and its crammed full of  liners battleships and diving submarines some of the guns actually fired using a powder charge! One these 42inch beautys could be purchased for a mere 300 gold francs in 1904 of courrse. Regards  pete

On the Independance, did you soak the card to get it to curve around for the bilges Pete? It looks very smooth.

Lovely work :-))

Yes the card was sprayed with water and rolled around a tin of beans the cut to shape, the funnels  main and secondary turrets  are left over plumbing  plastic pipe  the funnel bands are o rings as are the bases on the main armament , never throw everything  away

Hi Ian , the unit is d48 wilesco marine engine  its regarded as a toy steam engine , i have fitted a ceramic burner which greatly improves the performance of these engines, regards  pete

If it works and does not threat to incinerate your boat then I don't think it is fair to call ity a toy especially as it has to be as safe as any expensive boiler.

I have to agree Ian , i have two of these d48  engines and they are very effective and reliable and will turn a 60 mm prop with ease , I have one in borodino and one in massena, regards pete

Good idea Pete

One thing I've learnt from plastic model aircraft is that pure black paint doesn't work in scale and anthracite is perfect to represent black paint, same with white paint, a creamier colour works better.
Looking forward to the pictures

Trying out a new rivet look , using metal tape, a dressmakers tracing wheel  on the last two secondary turrets , will probably complete the remaining superstructure

That is a well tried and usually successful technique Pete. It looks like it does the job well.

Looking good but just remember that there are no rivet details on the side of the turrets (And arguably the roofs) as they were made of armour plate which was both tonged and grooved and bolted together from the inside (short bolts that do not penetrate to the outside). Firstly ordinary rivets would not be strong enough and secondly a line of drilled holes through any armour would weaken it too much. This is the same for the belt armour.

What confuses this is the additional 1" plating which was bolted from the outside added to the roofs of many British ships after Jutland and the KGV class of WW2 which show bolts on the roofs. This sometimes shows up clearly in pictures and its assumed its a line of rivets.

Cheers

Over the years I've been fortunate enough to actually go aboard some real Battleships. New Jersey, North Carolina and Texas. What struck me is that the armour is not that smooth, its more like a fine concrete finish and in places you can see the marks of the original wooden mould! There are visible imperfections in the surface of the armour. It all looks like its been hewn from stone.

There also a very strange juxtaposition between the armour and the welded parts of the ship which are super smooth. The notched joints  in the armour are very visible indeed.

Whilst I know how they made armour its still astonishing to see mementos of the lost art. Simplistically armour is a special grade of steel which is then sandwiched with another plate in a furnace with a layer of carbon in between and heated to white hot for a period of two to three weeks! The carbon is absorbed into the face and creates a very hard surface with a more ductile back. The whole being a homogeneous plate with a very hard outer layer but flexible enough not to shatter like glass when struck.

As an interesting aside a plate that can't be penetrated from the front can be penetrated from the back!

Its fun stuff

Cheers
