Revell 1/24 VW Samba Bus
« on: February 02, 2016, 08:11:04 pm »

HI all my next bit of light relief after the Citroen
this kit has really strange build order in that the body is built round the interior which is ok if you're spraying it normally but the paint job I intend will have some feathering so I need to make sure it will all line up correctly when put together so( I'm hoping this will work ok) I've tacked all the body together so I can spray the body as a whole, thus making sure it will all line up. I will be trying a couple firsts on this kit Alclad 2 and candy colours so wish me luck.

If you intend sending your VW north of the border, you might invest in some special paint so that you blend in  :embarrassed:

Hi all well here is tonights update, to all you Alclad 2 experts out there whats hapening here (it looks more like matt silver than chrome and it rubs off with your fingers) (the few small areas which do look like chrome are hard and dont seem to rub off) I used their black microfiller primer then their gloss black base coat then used the Chrome, do I need to give a second coat of the chrome or what?

HI all, ok so I sorted the chrome out but putting the candy colour over the top seems to have changed the chrome effect (I think in a quite pleasing way) I'm going to do a couple more coats of the cherry red candy then remove the masking then mask up the cherry red and do the chrome and then (cant decide on orange or emerald green candy on the top) personally I'm looking forward to see how it looks, I think It may be better than I visualized originally.

Hm, Regarding Alclad Chrome, you did the right thing from what I remember an 'expert' doing a few years back with the black base coat and a top coat of the metallic laquer but he was doing aluminium. I can only suggest you pop online and see if any alclad users have put up queries or problems that will help answer your question.

The 'Expert' sprayed in a garden shed with no insulation so it should not be due to temperture difference.

AFV and Soft skin modellers use Alclad on panel edges etc you could try one of their forums

Hi all well here is the next offering I, have had a bit of an accident (trying to cut corners) instead of masking it up with tape I used masking fluid and its reacted with the paint (I think when i put the light bezels on and the VW badge on the front it wont notice much)

Hi all well here is a tiny update I think I've hidden the damage from the masking fluid with a couple of strategically placed hippy flowers

Just what a friend of mine did with her car after someone had scratched the name of a famous Danish king in the door. (Well I think it was Cnut?)

I like the metallic green effect Ken:O)

Nice work - Interesting that they've modelled the correct double floor panel chassis - this was only used on double-door & sunroof models to strengthen the frame & body.

Hi all well in my haste to move this from the leak I've lost the inner skin at the front so will have to model it with the front doors shut (don't think it will notice then) I thought I would add curtains to it, hope you like them.

Groovy Ken! It is a shame that the flood has cause you so much bother. I know that sods law will have you find the inner skin as soon as you next look after you have stuck the door in place >>:-(

I like those seats very much:O)

Goos idea Ken. I reckon vehicles need some form of human interaction to give an idea of scale and also just to add interest. Ae you going to build a model Barbecue?

Ha! A new idea for a smoke unit. A bbq.
If your bus is going to be anything like the aircooled engine my mate had, lots of smoke from the exhaust on statup too. ok2

A tip for figure painting is to treat them like model tanks/vehicles etc as you can apply a wash to darken the shadows and drybrush the highlights on. This includes the hair as well.

Flesh is the most awkard bit to do, but a bit or trial and error will achieve results.

Keep up the good work, your efforts never dissapoint.

Looks good. I was wondering what you were making for a second until I saw it in context.

Having seen and made Military dioramas over the years, it is a nice change to see a civilian one.

Your Alclad issue looks like you've sprayed to much chrome on, when this happens it goes dull and dusty. To be honest I've tried Alclad on my railings and have never been happy with the results.
