Sheerline Akula update...
« on: May 04, 2016, 09:34:29 am »

Well boys n' girls, it's been a while since I posted anything regarding the Akula, so here's an update:

It went off to Ron at R&R Model Engineering a while back to be completely revamped. It now has a custom designed and built twin piston tank module installed, and a set of specially made, fully operational, bow torpedoes. It's now finished and will be on it's way back to it's home port very soon...I can't wait to get out on the water with it. If I can remember how to drive it...

Anyways, here's a few pictures of her...

Grateful thanks to Ron at R&R Model Engineering...

Very nice piece of engineering, I particularly like the quick release pushrod linkages.
 :-))
What function do the four micro switches have?

Ah, I knew you'd say that.  :}

The switches operate the piston tanks...Ron did start off with Action switchers, but for some unknown reason they refused to cooperate. Even Ian at Component Shop couldn't figure put why, so it was back to using good old fashioned microswitches.

Personally I prefer microswitches, much easier to replace if needs me, and they work just as well as fancy electronic switchers.

I have the Twin Relay switcher by Action in U-37. It is working on a channel I modified with variable pots etc for end point control. I found it is sensitive to getting the correct 'mid-point' signal from your stick. If it is off a bit too much it gets the 'hump'. So, probably a Tx issue rather than one with the Action units. your pots may have drifted a bit off the normal neutral position. you wouldn't notice with a servo attached though.

Probably a stupid question but how do you waterproof the end point cut off microswitches at the outside end of the piston tanks?

I think they are at the mercy of the fresh water! However, I believe the system has been used for many years with success...although our salt water lake would have them for lunch in about two minutes :o

If Ron brings this to Bournville we will have some fun with it, it does need to be tested. I have only ever seen Richard with his thunder tiger which he threw water over to make it look like he had been driving it lol
